"You and our little life are enough for me now, and it's going to be more than enough for us forever because I can't afford to share you with anyone else," I replied, my voice filled with sincerity. I gently patted her head, reminding her to rest, just as the doctor had warned us she needed to.
I just kept my head on her chest, and before I could settle in, our daughter cried, making both of us alert. I leaned back immediately.
"Looks like someone doesn’t want to share her property," I chuckled, glancing at Ira before moving toward our baby and picking her up in my arms.
"Not even half a day in this world, and you’re already getting jealous of your own father, you jealous little birdie," I said in a baby voice, gently bopping her nose. Just then, she pooped. She literally pooped in my arms.
"Ha ab lag raha ha
i na ki baap ban gaya," Dad said as he entered the room to meet his grandchild, while Dadi laughed at the scene. I literally ran to the washroom to clean myself, handing the baby over to Dadi in the process.
This is going to be tough now. Very tough.
"Kabir, let me hold her," Ira said as I returned from the washroom after cleaning myself. Dadi was rocking our great-grandchild in her arms, having just changed her nappy, making me feel embarrassed about my earlier reaction.
"Okay, let me help you," I said, walking over to my wife. I adjusted the bed and supported her back with pillows, making sure she was comfortable.
"Her eyes are just like yours; it feels like I am holding you again," Mumma said, carefully handing our baby to Ira while guiding her properly.
In the next moment, Ira's eyes filled with tears as she gazed at the face of our little bundle of joy. She hugged her tightly, planting a gentle kiss on her forehead, as if afraid that a kiss might hurt her.
Everyone was present in the room while Kiaan was desperately waiting for his turn to hold the baby in his arms, as she was still in Ira's hands when the nurse entered, capturing everyone's attention.
"It's time for the baby to feed. You all need to go out as we need to teach her how to latch properly," she said, earning nods from us. Kiaan stood up immediately, whining like a child as he cried, "Why does this always happen? Whenever it's my turn to hold her, someone always comes in between! I'm not going, yaar!" His behavior amused me; and now I had to come up with a good reason to help him understand.
"It's okay, Kiaan. We can go to the room and prepare a nice grand welcome for our princess, can't we? Besides, I'm also in line after you, yaar, so just chill," Ansh suggested, placing his hand on Kiaan's shoulder, his eyes shining a little with excitement as he was successful in convincing Kiaan.
"Yeah! And we can also get lots of clothes and toys in the meantime," Mumma suggested, making Kiaan's eyes twinkle with excitement. Finally, he agreed, and everyone let out a sigh of relief.
"But the moment Bhai and Bhabhi arrive at the mansion, I will hold her first in my arms," he insisted, and I nodded in agreement, shaking my head at my elder baby’s determination.
As everyone stood up to leave, I remained rooted in my spot making the nurse confuse as she finally asked, "Are you going to stay here, sir?"
"Yes! I am. I want to learn this so I can help her in case she gets tired, sleeping, or very exhausted. I've heard that the post-delivery period can be really tough," I replied, glancing at my wife from the corner of my eyes only for her eyes to widen in surprise before she composed herself.
As the nurse stood up to draw the curtains for privacy, a sudden commotion outside caught our attention, making both of us exchange a confused glance. The nurse quickly stepped outside to see what was happening.
