Sylus leads me the way downstairs, heading towards the kitchen, his footsteps echoing softly on the stairs. As we reach the kitchen he gestures towards a chair at the table. "Have a seat!" His tone is light and casual, he seems to be in a good mood. "I'll make us some breakfast." I am confused to see this happy, carefree Sylus, so I sit down without saying anything.
He moves around the kitchen, humming cheerfully, gathering the ingredients needed for breakfast. Eggs, bacon, bread... As he cooks, I watch him carefully, my eyes tracking his every move. I am still wary of the man before me, still unsure of his intentions and motives. And this whole situation feels absurd. The bedtime story (...by the way, I need to know what happened to Lily...) and now this happy version of Sylus making breakfast. Did I cross a dimension by accident?
Once the food is ready, Sylus brings it to the table, placing a plate in front of me while he takes a seat opposite me. His eyes are locked on my face as we begin to eat. For a few moments, we eat in silence, the only sound in the room the clinking of our silverware against our plates. Finally, Sylus speaks up, breaking the silence between us. "Do you remember anything from before?" He asks casually, his tone light. "Anything about our past?"
"Not enough... It makes no sense at all..." I mumble with my mouth full of scrambled eggs. Sylus takes a few more bites of food, mulling over my words. "What do you remember, exactly?" he asks, his tone still casual, but with a hint of concern hidden underneath.
I inhale deeply before I start to speak, summarizing the facts. My tone matter of fact, like I would summarize a case of my hunter job. "A long time ago... We were some kind of lovers... You were different as you are now... softer... But then you forced me to kill you... You also have mentioned I abandoned you..." My eyes flicker to his face to analyze Sylus's reaction.
His expression hardens as I mention the events of our past. His jaw clenching slightly as the painful memories come flooding back. "Yes." Sylus confirms, his tone low and tight. "We were lovers. And yes, I did force you to kill me. It was... complicated, to say the least. I was a fool, blinded by love and trust in someone who betrayed me." He lets out a bitter chuckle, his dark eyes fixed on my face. "And that person... that person was you." Sylus said quietly. "You betrayed me. You broke my trust. You stabbed me in the back, literally and figuratively."
Sylus leans back in his chair, his eyes still locked on mine. I am struggling to process this information. He takes another deep breath, bracing himself for the next part of the story. "But it wasn't your fault." His tone softening slightly. "You didn't know the whole truth. You were manipulated." He runs a hand through his hair, frustration and anger mixed with a hint of resignation etched into his features.
A specific memory flickers in my mind. Me piercing him with the sword. I close my eyes focusing to notice more details this time... his face is distorted in pain... and... there are horns on his head...? What the hell...? His hands firmly gripped around my wrists, forcing me to push the sword even deeper. So much blood... and everything around us is on fire... the scene looking like the end of the world.
His eyes narrow as I open my eyes again. "Do you remember now?" Sylus asks quietly, his voice barely above a whisper. "Do you remember what I really am? As I do not response, he pressures me. "That night... the night you stabbed me..." His voice trails off, his throat tightening as he says the words. "Do you remember what I looked like?" He leans forward, his eyes not leaving mine, watching my expression as I try to process what I saw, what I remembered.
"Horns... You looked like a... a... D-D-Demon...?" My tongue stumbles over the word. "I already know that you are not human... I know you can't die... At least not that easy... I tried it twice...?! And it seems you can teleport..." I sum up what I know about Sylus, forcing me to keep calm, using my fingers to count the facts.
He nods slowly, a wry smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Close. I'm a Nephilim. Half angel, half human. Not technically a demon, but close enough, I suppose." He pauses for a moment, letting that information sink in before continuing. "And yes. I am immortal, in a sense. I can't die. Not easily, at least. And you've definitely tried." He chuckles dryly, the memory of my attempts on his life still fresh in his mind. "I must admit, you have been rather persistent in your efforts to get rid of me." His tone is a mix of grudging respect and amusement. "And I... well, I have a few... unusual abilities, let's call them."
I feel that I can't take in any more information. My head is spinning from wrecking my mind, the struggle to put the puzzle together almost making me vomit. There is so much I don't know... that I don't understand... How did we even meet in the first place? How did I fall in love with a Nephilim, a monster? And why did I betray Sylus? Who manipulated me? What pieces am I missing? "I am going to puke...!" I gasp as I press my hand on my mouth in sudden nausea.
Sylus sees my overwhelmed expression and the color draining from my face. Standing up quickly from his chair he rushes to my side, a hand on my shoulder, his voice gentle yet firm. "Breathe," he instructs. "Inhale. Exhale. Slow and steady."
Guiding me through the breathing exercise, his hand is still firmly on my shoulder, anchoring me to the present moment. I can feel the tension and confusion within me, the weight of the past and the unknown pressing down on me. "Just focus on your breathing. In and out. In and out. Don't think about anything else right now. Just breathe." His grip on my shoulder stays firm as he keeps his eyes locked on my face, watching as the color returns to my cheeks and my breathing slowly steadies.
Once my breathing returns to normal, Sylus gives my shoulder a gentle squeeze before taking a step back, giving me some space. "Are you okay?" Sylus asks, his voice and eyes laced with concern. "It's... a lot... that's all..." I say between inhaling and exhaling... in and out, in and out. "I need a break..." Sylus nods, understanding the overwhelm I am going through. "Of course." His tone is gentle. "We can take a break. We'll talk more later. Right now, you need some time to process everything and rest."
