As the sun began to dip toward the horizon, casting a warm glow over the city, I stood in front of the mirror one last time, adjusting my dress. The excitement bubbling within me felt almost electric, and I could hardly believe that tonight I'd be with Colin. I took a deep breath, letting the nerves wash over me. This was a big step, one I had been both looking forward to and dreading. With just a little over an hour until he'd pick me up, I decided to distract myself. I pulled out my phone and messaged my best friend, Sara, who had been encouraging me throughout this budding crush.
Me: Getting ready for my date with Colin! Any last-minute tips?
Almost instantly, my phone buzzed with her enthusiastic reply.
Sara: OMG, yes! Remember to breathe! You're going to do great! And don't forget to have fun!
I chuckled, grateful for her support. I knew I would need it; stepping out of my comfort zone felt daunting, but I was determined to enjoy the moment. After a quick chat with Sara about her own latest dating adventures, I decided to head into the kitchen for a glass of water to calm my nerves.
The minutes flew by, and before I knew it, I was double-checking my phone to ensure I hadn't missed a message. I grabbed my purse, slipping in my wallet, lipstick, and a small mirror. Just as I was about to head out, the doorbell rang, sending a jolt of excitement through me.
I took one last look in the mirror, touched up my lipstick, and opened the door. There stood Colin, looking effortlessly handsome in a fitted black shirt and dark jeans. His hair was slightly tousled, and his green eyes lit up as they met mine.
"Wow, you look amazing," he said, his smile wide and genuine.
"Thanks! You're not looking too bad yourself," I replied, trying to keep my voice steady. The butterflies in my stomach danced wildly as I stepped outside, locking the door behind me.
"Shall we?" Colin gestured toward the street, and I fell into step beside him, feeling a rush of warmth as our shoulders brushed against each other.
We walked through the bustling streets of New York, the city alive with energy as people moved around us, laughing and enjoying their evenings. The sweet scent of street food wafted through the air, and I couldn't help but smile at the vibrant atmosphere.
"So, what's your go-to pizza topping?" Colin asked, breaking the comfortable silence between us.
I laughed, the sound light and free. "Definitely pepperoni. Classic, but you can't go wrong with it!"
"Solid choice. I'm more of a margherita guy myself, but I can get on board with pepperoni," he replied, glancing at me with a playful spark in his eyes.
As we continued to talk, I found myself opening up to him more than I expected. We shared stories about our favorite places in the city, our childhood memories, and even our guilty pleasures—his being a deep obsession with cheesy action movies and mine being a penchant for baking (though I might have mentioned that as an excuse to bring him back to the bakery someday).
When we arrived at the pizzeria, the neon sign flickered cheerfully, and the warmth from inside spilled out into the street. Colin held the door open for me, and I stepped inside, immediately enveloped by the mouthwatering aroma of freshly baked pizza.
"Right this way," he said, guiding me to a small table in the corner, away from the bustling crowd but close enough to soak in the lively atmosphere.
After placing our orders, we settled into easy conversation, the initial nerves fading into laughter and playful banter. As we shared a slice of pizza, I couldn't help but notice the way Colin leaned in slightly when he spoke, his eyes focused on me as if I were the only person in the room.
"Are you always this charming, or is it just for me?" I teased, taking a bite of my pizza, trying to play it cool.
He chuckled, a hint of mischief in his eyes. "Only when the company is as captivating as yours."
Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I felt a thrill of connection between us, a spark I hadn't anticipated. As the evening unfolded, it felt as if the world outside faded away, and it was just the two of us sharing laughter, stories, and a growing chemistry.
But deep down, I knew this was just the beginning. Whatever happened tonight, I was ready to embrace it.
