Seulgi sat at a small table in the café, her fingers nervously tapping the edge of her cup as she waited for Irene. When Irene finally walked in, her expression unreadable, Seulgi’s heart raced with a mix of anticipation and worry.
“Did you talk to her?” Seulgi asked as soon as Irene sat down.
Irene hesitated, looking a little confused. “No, I didn’t. Something strange happened.”
Seulgi frowned, her curiosity piqued. “Strange? What do you mean?”
Irene sighed, running a hand through her hair as she recalled the day’s events. “I got a message from Jennie, or at least I thought it was from Jennie, saying Hyeong’s condition had worsened and I needed to go to the hospital immediately. So I rushed over there. But when I got to the hospital, Jennie said she hadn’t even touched her phone. She was surprised when I asked her about it.”
Seulgi blinked, trying to make sense of what Irene was saying. “Wait, so if Jennie didn’t send that message, then who did?”
“That’s exactly what I’ve been wondering,” Irene replied, her brow furrowed. “It felt so urgent, and I didn’t even question it. But when I got to the hospital, Hyeong’s condition was stable—at least for now. Jennie confirmed it.”
Seulgi leaned back in her chair, puzzled. “That’s weird. Why would someone pretend to be Jennie? And why now, when we’re trying to talk to Lisa?”
Irene shook her head, frustration creeping into her voice. “I don’t know, but after I got that message, I had to leave. I didn’t even get a chance to see her.”
Seulgi chewed her lip, her mind racing. “Do you think it’s some kind of coincidence, or could someone be trying to stop you from talking to Lisa?”
“I don’t know,” Irene admitted. “But it felt off. The timing, the urgency… it’s like someone didn’t want me to talk to her. And now I’m back at square one.”
Seulgi crossed her arms, deep in thought. “This is getting complicated. Jennie didn’t send the message, Hyeong’s condition is stable, and you didn’t talk to Lisa. So what now?”
“I’m not sure,” Irene said, her voice quieter. “But whoever sent that message, they know what’s happening. I’ll have to figure out who it was later, but right now, I need to focus on getting Lisa involved. Jennie’s already talked to Dr. Lim about her being a potential donor, but we need to make sure Lisa knows.”
“So, have you heard anything more from Jennie?” Seulgi asked, trying to bring the conversation back on track.
Irene sighed and set down her spoon, meeting Seulgi’s concerned gaze. “Yeah, I talked to her. She told me she needs to talk to Jiyong first.”
Seulgi raised an eyebrow, confused. “Talk to Jiyong? About what?”
“About Lisa,” Irene said quietly. “About the possibility of her being a donor for Hyeong’s transplant.”
Seulgi blinked in surprise. “Wait, Jennie hasn’t told him yet?”
Irene shook her head. “No, not yet. She feels like she can’t move forward without discussing it with him first. I mean, it’s a huge decision, and it involves Lisa—someone from their past. I think Jennie’s worried about how Jiyong will react.”
Seulgi’s brow furrowed, trying to process the complexity of the situation. “I get that, but Hyeong’s life is on the line. They don’t have much time to delay, right?”
“I know,” Irene agreed, her voice tinged with frustration. “But Jennie’s torn. She knows how important this is for Hyeong, but she also doesn’t want to blindside Jiyong with something so sensitive, especially when it involves someone like Lisa. She doesn’t want to make decisions without him.”
Seulgi leaned back in her chair, a concerned look on her face. “Do you think Jiyong will even agree? I mean, considering everything that happened with Lisa…”
Irene hesitated before speaking. “I’m not sure. Jennie didn’t say exactly how she thinks he’ll react. She just said she feels it’s only right to involve him in the decision, especially since it’s their son’s life. But she knows it’s going to be a tough conversation.”
Seulgi nodded slowly, understanding the gravity of the situation. “I get why she wants to talk to him, but I hope she doesn’t wait too long. Time isn’t on their side.”
“Exactly,” Irene replied, her tone more urgent now. “Hyeong needs a donor as soon as possible, and Lisa might be his best chance. But if Jiyong can’t accept that, or if it causes a bigger issue between them…”
Seulgi cut in gently, her eyes filled with concern. “Then it might make things even harder for Jennie.”
“Yeah,” Irene said softly. “Jennie’s already carrying so much, and now she has to worry about how Jiyong will take this.”
Seulgi sat in silence for a moment, processing everything. “It’s just so unfair that they have to deal with all this on top of Hyeong’s condition. I hope Jiyong sees the bigger picture. For Hyeong’s sake.”
“I hope so too,” Irene murmured. “Jennie’s trying to do what’s right for everyone, but at the end of the day, she’ll have to do whatever it takes to save Hyeong, even if it means difficult conversations with Jiyong.”
Seulgi reached across the table and gave Irene’s hand a comforting squeeze. “Whatever happens, we’ll be there for her. And if Lisa’s the key to saving Hyeong, we’ll make sure Jennie gets through to Jiyong.”
