The city skyline stretched out behind Lisa as she stood at the massive glass window in her office, lost in thought, the weight of her responsibilities heavy on her shoulders. She stared out at the world below, unaware of the emotional storm about to walk through her door.
The faint sound of the office door opening caught her attention, but she didn't turn right away. It wasn't until she heard soft, familiar footsteps that her heart skipped a beat. Slowly, she turned, and her breath caught in her throat. There, standing just inside the door, was Jennie.
Jennie's heart pounded as her eyes locked on Lisa's silhouette. Memories she had buried deep began to resurface-the bratrayal, the pain, the love, the loss. It had been four years, and yet here she was, standing in the same room as the woman who had once meant everything to her. Jennie's pulse quickened, her chest tight with emotions she hadn't expected to hit her so hard.
When Lisa finally turned, the shock on her face was unmistakable. Her usually composed expression faltered, and for a moment, her brown eyes widened in disbelief. It felt unreal. Her gaze locked with Jennie's, and for a second, the world seemed to stop. Neither of them spoke. The silence was deafening, filled with everything they hadn't said over the years.
Lisa's throat tightened. Jennie. After all this time. It felt like a lifetime ago since they last saw each other, but the pain was still fresh, like an open wound. For a heartbeat, neither woman moved, the weight of their past hanging heavily between them.
But the fragile moment shattered when Jiyong stepped in behind Jennie, his presence breaking the delicate thread that held them in their shared silence. Lisa blinked, her emotions crashing back like a tidal wave. Her brows furrowed slightly as she registered the situation. Why were they here? Together?
"What's going on?" Lisa finally found her voice, though it was strained, her confusion evident as she tried to piece together why the two of them had come to her office.
Jennie, feeling her throat tighten, stepped forward, forcing herself to speak despite the tremor in her voice. "Lisa, we-we need to talk. It's about Hyeong." She confessed, her words.
Lisa's brow furrowed deeper. "Hyeong?" she echoed, the pieces of the puzzle still not falling into place.
Jennie swallowed hard, her emotions raw. "Yes, he sick. He needs a bone marrow transplant. And we... we've exhausted every option."
Lisa's heart sank, her confusion quickly turning into concern. Jennie's voice trembled as she continued. "Lisa, you're his only hope. The doctors say you're likely the only potential match."
The room fell into an unbearable silence. Lisa stood there, her mind racing. She couldn't believe what she was hearing. Jennie's words hit her like a freight train, stirring up old wounds and feelings she had tried so hard to bury.
"Me?" Lisa whispered, her voice thick with disbelief. She looked between Jennie and Jiyong, her eyes pleading for some clarity, for anything to make sense of this overwhelming situation. "You want me to...?"
Jennie nodded, her eyes brimming with tears. "Please, Lisa. We've done every test possible, but no one matches. The doctor said that the biological father is the most likely suitable donor. He needs you."
Jiyong stepped forward, his voice steady but edged with tension. "We wouldn't be here if there was any other way. I know this is a lot to ask, but our son's life depends on this."
Lisa's heart pounded in her chest. She had never imagined meeting Jennie like this-after all these years, carrying so much history-and now, being asked to save a child she had never met. Her mind spun with a thousand questions, the weight of the past pressing down on her, but Jennie's eyes, filled with desperation and fear, cut through everything. Despite the years of pain and distance, Lisa knew she couldn't walk away.
Taking a deep breath, she exhaled slowly, her voice trembling but resolute. "I'll do it. I'll help your son."
Jennie's breath hitched, her eyes glistening with tears of relief. But even as hope flickered, the weight of their unresolved past hung between them, heavy and unspoken. For now, though, none of that mattered. The only thing that did was saving Hyeong.
