Jennie sat beside Hyeong’s hospital bed, her fingers gently tracing the small bruises on his tiny hand—vivid reminders of the countless blood transfusions he’d endured. Her heart ached at the sight, a deep sadness weighing her down. She wished she could take away all his pain, protect him from everything he’d been through.
"Hyeong-ah," Jennie whispered softly, her voice thick with emotion. She brushed a stray hair from his forehead, watching his pale face as he slept, the steady beeping of the machines a constant reminder of his fragile condition.
“You’re going to be okay, sweetheart,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “Someone’s going to help you.”
As she spoke those words, tears welled in her eyes, the weight of the truth sinking in. That *someone* was his father—Lisa. The person who had once been part of his life, is his only hope. The realization of it all hit her hard, and Jennie found herself holding back a sob. She bent down, pressing a gentle kiss to Hyeong’s hand, wishing she could take his suffering away.
“I’m so sorry, Hyeong,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “But you’re strong. We’ll get through this, I promise.” Tears rolled down her cheeks, but she smiled softly through them, determined to hold on to hope.
Irene sat down beside her, wrapping a comforting arm around her shoulders. Jennie leaned into her, grateful for the silent support.
"I’m so proud of you," Irene finally said, her voice gentle but full of warmth. “It wasn’t easy, I know. But you faced Lisa. You did what you had to do for Hyeong, and that’s all that matters."
Jennie let out a shaky breath, wiping at her eyes. “It was harder than I thought. Seeing her again, after everything…” Her voice cracked, and she swallowed, trying to stay composed. “But Hyeong is all that matters now.”
Irene nodded, her hand rubbing comforting circles on Jennie’s back. “You did the right thing, Jennie. You put your son first, and that takes so much strength.”
Jennie gave a small, teary smile, looking down at her hands. “I just hope this works. I hope she’s a match.”
“She will be,” Irene reassured her, her voice firm but kind. “And whatever happens, you’re not alone. You’ve got me, and you’ve got people who care about you. We’ll get through this.”
Jennie leaned her head against Irene’s shoulder, the comforting presence of her friend grounding her in this storm of emotions. “Thank you, Irene. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“You don’t have to know,” Irene whispered softly, holding her close. “I’ll always be here, no matter what.”
Jiyong stormed into his office, slamming the door behind him with enough force to make the walls shake. His chest heaved with frustration, each breath harder to control than the last. The anger, the betrayal, the helplessness—it all churned inside him like a storm, wild and untamed. The reality of Lisa re-entering their lives was suffocating him. He couldn’t accept it. He wouldn’t.
With a guttural yell, Jiyong swiped his desk clean, sending papers, files, and his laptop crashing to the floor. The clatter echoed through the room, but it wasn’t enough to quiet the fury boiling in his veins. He grabbed a nearby chair and threw it against the wall, the wood splintering as it hit. He had lost control. Everything around him felt like it was falling apart, and he could do nothing to stop it.
His office, once pristine and orderly, was now a mess of broken furniture and shattered items. But Jiyong barely noticed. He was too consumed by his rage. Lisa. Lisa was back. The woman who threatened to undo everything he had fought for. Jennie, his wife, their son—everything was at risk because of her.
“How could this happen?” he muttered to himself, running his hands through his hair in frustration. His heart pounded painfully in his chest. The thought of Lisa being Hyeong’s only chance at survival gnawed at him, tearing apart the careful world he had built. The reality that Jennie needed her, that they all needed her, was like poison in his veins.
He slammed his fist into the wall, the pain in his knuckles barely registering as it radiated through his hand. “I can’t do this… I can’t just stand here and watch everything fall apart.”
But what could he do? He was trapped, forced to play along, to let Jennie reach out to Lisa, to let Lisa be a part of their lives again—for Hyeong’s sake. The helplessness gnawed at him, twisting the anger into something deeper, something more painful. He had no control over this, and it killed him inside.
