Giselleana POV:
My heart nearly stopped when she said those last words—"I forgive you." It was like I could finally breathe again, but the relief was short-lived. Because even though she forgave me, the weight of everything I'd done still hung between us. I could see the pain in her eyes, how she was holding herself together even though she probably wanted to scream.
I opened my mouth, trying to find the right words, but nothing came out at first. What could I say that would even matter right now?
"I don't deserve your forgiveness," I finally managed, my voice soft. "I don't deserve you at all, honestly. But I'm going to prove that I can be better. That I can be the person you deserve."
Xolani didn't say anything right away, just crossed her arms and stared at me, as if trying to decide if she could believe me. Her eyes softened, just a little, and I took a step forward, my heart pounding.
"I'll do whatever it takes to make this right," I continued, trying to hold her gaze. "I know I messed up. I know that what I did is unforgivable to most people. But you—you've always been different. I never should've taken that for granted."
Her lips parted like she was going to say something, but she stopped herself, sighing deeply instead. "I need you to understand something, Giselleana. I'm giving you another chance, but if you screw this up again... that's it. I can't keep getting hurt like this."
"I understand," I said quickly, nodding. "I won't mess up again. I swear."
She looked away, her shoulders slumping as if the weight of everything had finally settled in. "We'll see," she muttered under her breath.
I wanted to reach out, to hold her, but I didn't. Not yet. I wasn't sure if she was ready for that, and I didn't want to push her.
The silence stretched between us, and I could feel the tension still lingering in the air. I glanced at the flowers and the basket on the bench, suddenly feeling ridiculous for even thinking that something like that could fix what I'd done.
"Come on," Xolani said, standing up straighter and grabbing her bag from the locker. "Let's just go. I need some air."
I nodded, grabbing the flowers and basket in one hand, and followed her out of the locker room. We walked in silence, the sound of our footsteps echoing in the empty hallway. Every second felt fragile, like we were walking on thin ice, and one wrong move could shatter everything again.
But I was determined not to let that happen. Not this time.
Xolani POV:
As we stepped out into the hallway, the tension lingered in the air like an uninvited guest. I could feel Giselleana walking beside me, her presence both comforting and suffocating. My mind raced with everything that had just happened, trying to process my emotions while keeping my walls intact.
I glanced at her, and she looked down at the flowers and the basket I knew she still held. The gesture felt like a hollow echo of what was really at stake between us. It wasn't about the flowers; it was about trust. Could I really believe her this time?
"I'm sorry," she broke the silence, her voice low. "I shouldn't have—"
"Stop," I interrupted, my tone sharper than I intended. "We don't need to keep rehashing it. I just... I need time to sort through everything." I turned my gaze to the ground, trying to find my footing in this mess.
"I get that," she said quietly. "And I'm going to give you space, but I hope you'll still talk to me. I want to show you I'm serious about this."
"Yeah, well, talk is cheap," I muttered, feeling the weight of frustration settle back in. "You say you want to change, but I've heard those words before."
"I know," she said, her voice filled with an urgency that cut through the air. "But I really mean it."
I paused at the end of the hallway, my heart racing as her words sank in. Was it really that simple? Did she actually get it?
"I promise I'll do the work," she said earnestly, her eyes pleading with me. "Just tell me what I need to do, and I'll do it. I'll wait however long it takes for you to feel okay about us again. Just please don't shut me out completely."
I felt the tension in my chest loosen just a bit at her words. Maybe there was hope for us after all. But I needed to be careful. "I can't make any promises," I finally said, my voice quieter now.
"Thinking is better than nothing," she replied, a small smile creeping onto her lips.
I allowed myself a tiny smile in return, a flicker of warmth breaking through the storm. Maybe there was a way forward.
She nodded, relief washing over her. We stepped outside together, the cool breeze hitting our faces. I took a deep breath, feeling a little lighter as the fresh air filled my lungs. Maybe this was the beginning of something new. Maybe this time, it would be different.
As we walked side by side, I couldn't shake the feeling that we were both taking a risk, and that thought made me both anxious and excited. With every step, I felt us moving towards a fragile truce, a tentative promise of what could be. I just hoped we'd both be brave enough to hold on to it.
