Her list was simple—bedsheets, a hamper, and snacks—but the task felt monumental with the weight of everything else on her mind. The smell of fresh popcorn from the snack stand barely registered; her thoughts were far from the store and firmly rooted in memories of Xolani.Not far away, Xolani strolled through the electronics section, casually inspecting televisions. Her cart was nearly empty except for a mini fridge and a few small items she'd grabbed on impulse. She checked her phone, noting the time—2:32 PM. She had no clue why her chest felt tight, but the thought of Madison flickered in her mind again.

As Xolani turned the corner toward the bedding section, Madison was just a few aisles down, comparing sheet sets. Madison's cart squeaked as she pivoted, causing Xolani to pause and glance up. The sound was oddly familiar, but the crowd of shoppers blurred faces into anonymity. For a brief second, she thought she saw a blue shirt that looked like something Madison would wear. She shook her head, dismissing it as wishful thinking, and turned toward the registers.
