Omnicesnt pov:
The drive back to North Carolina was quieter than expected, but not in a way that felt uncomfortable. The hum of the car engine mixed with the soft rhythm of Xolani's playlist filled the silence, each song perfectly chosen to match the calm yet reflective mood of the journey.
Xolani kept her eyes on the road, her fingers drumming lightly against the steering wheel in time with the music. Madison sat beside her, legs tucked up on the seat, gazing out the window as the scenery blurred past. Their shared silence spoke volumes, a quiet understanding of how much had changed between them.
Occasionally, Xolani would glance over, offering Madison a small smile that Madison would return, the warmth in their unspoken communication wrapping them both in a sense of peace. They stopped once at a rest area for snacks and a quick stretch before getting back on the road, both eager to settle back into their dorms after an eventful break.
By the time they reached campus, it was late evening. The parking lot was sparsely filled, with only a few scattered students dragging suitcases toward the dorm entrances. Madison helped Xolani unload her things first before heading to her own room.
Their goodnight was brief, but the promise of seeing each other the next day lingered in the air as they hugged.

A Month Later
Xolani's new apartment was small but cozy, with a view of the city skyline that became even more beautiful at night. It wasn't far from campus, but it felt like a world away from the shared dorms and crowded hallways. She'd spent the past few weeks making it her own—soft throw blankets on the couch, framed photos on the walls, and even a tiny plant that sat on the windowsill despite her not being sure how to keep it alive.
Madison had arrived with a bag of takeout, setting it down on the coffee table as she kicked off her shoes and plopped onto the couch. Xolani laughed, shaking her head as she followed suit, her legs curling up beneath her.
"You act like you live here," Xolani teased, reaching for the food.
"I might as well," Madison shot back, grinning. "This place is too nice for me to not crash here whenever I feel like it."
Xolani rolled her eyes but didn't argue. She liked having Madison around—her presence made the apartment feel less lonely.
They ate in comfortable silence at first, the hum of the TV playing in the background. Madison glanced around, taking in the space again as if seeing it for the first time.
"You did good, Zai," she said, gesturing at the apartment.
Xolani looked around, her lips curving into a smile. "Yeah. It's not bad, huh? Took a lot of saving and a little begging my uncle for help, but it's mine."
"You should be proud," Madison said softly. "This is a big deal."
They sat back, the conversation shifting as they began to talk about what was coming next.
"Okay, so you're officially off campus now," Madison started, ticking off on her fingers. "You're free from the noisy neighbors, you've got your own space... What's the plan?"
Xolani leaned back, her head resting on the cushion. "Honestly? I just want to get through this semester without losing my mind. Classes are already kicking my ass, and I'm still trying to figure out how to balance everything."
"You will," Madison said confidently. "You always do."
"And what about you?" Xolani asked, turning the conversation around. "What's next for you?"
