Xolani pov:
We arrived at Madison's house just as the evening light started to settle into a soft glow. The drive had felt long, but now that we were here, the nerves were setting in. I was about to see Madison's mom again, the woman I saw as my second mother. I wasn't sure how'd she feel about me. I couldn't shake this anxiety.
Madison, sensing my unease, squeezed my hand as we stood at the door. "You good?" she asked, her voice soft but filled with care.
I nodded, forcing a smile. "Yeah, just... nervous."
She gave me a reassuring kiss and rang the doorbell. We didn't have to wait long before the door swung open, revealing Madison's mom. She stood there, her face a mixture of confusion and hesitation. When her eyes landed on me, I felt a rush of emotions, guilt, regret, and hope.
"Hey mommy I'm homeeeee"
"omg hey sweetie I didn't know you'd be coming for thanksgiving?!?!? Who'd did you bring with you?"
I didn't even think of the possibility she wouldn't recognize me I lost weight and have dreads that cover my face and dress even more like a boy.
I flipped my dreads revealing my old line up I was letting grow out because I wanted my edges back, which revealed my face.
"Hey Ms. White" I said, my voice a little shaky.
Madison's mom's expression softened slightly, though there was still a noticeable distance between us. "Xolani?... it's been a while."
"I know, I'm sorry," I replied, not knowing how else to start.
Her eyes flickered with something I couldn't quite place. Maybe it was pain, maybe it was just the weight of everything that had happened. After a moment, she sighed and stepped aside, letting us in.
As we walked through the hallway, Madison squeezed my hand, offering me a silent reminder that everything would be okay. But deep down, I wasn't sure.
We made our way into the living room, and I could feel the weight of the silence pressing down on us. Once we were seated, Madison's mom took a long look at me. Her eyes softened, but the unease was still there.
"wow xolani, you look all grown up. I've missed having my second daughter around."
"mom you know stella is also your daughter too right"
"not today she isn't, the way she pissed me off earlier I sent her to be with her aunt for the weekend." she chuckled a little.
"I missed being around yall as well I had a lo going on senior year, like a lot"
"I understand, honestly so did Madison."
"mom please stop, do not."
"Okay, I'm sorry sweetheart"
I looked at Madison with a confused look. What was she hiding? my thoughts were cut short by Ms. Whites voice.
"What happened to you xolani wherr'd did you go? and how'd you reach out to madison again? you know I tried reaching out to your mom but she gave me this short answer which didn't really answer any of my questions."
