Omnicesnt pov:

The chill of the fall air made the highway lights blur as Xolani and Madison cruised along the road. It was late Wednesday night, the start of the Thanksgiving break, and they were headed from their college in North Carolina to Xolani's uncle's place in New Jersey. It had been months since Xolani had planned this trip, before the chaos of their reunion, the whirlwind of emotions, and before they both found their way back to each other. But now, as they sat side by side in Xolani's car, things felt... different. Easier, somehow.

Madison shifted in her seat, her hand automatically reaching for Xolani's. Their fingers intertwined without hesitation. It still amazed Madison how seamlessly they had fallen back into each other's lives, like no time had passed at all. The months apart had been hard, but now that they were together again, it felt right. They talked constantly, often texting late into the night, catching up on everything they missed and everything they were still figuring out.

As the miles passed, Madison's thoughts drifted to Xolani. She still remembered how they'd found each other again, how Xolani had walked into her dorm room after months of silence. That first night, the awkwardness between them had been palpable, but once they'd gotten past it, everything fell back into place.

Madison had learned a lot about Xolani since then, things she hadn't known before. How Xolani had started working the streets at fifteen. The money, the cars, the tough exterior, it all made sense now. Xolani had done what she needed to survive, but Madison never let it change how she saw her. She was still the girl she'd missed, the girl who'd taken her breath away every time she laughed.

Madison squeezed Xolani's hand. "So, your uncle... what's he like?"

Xolani looked over, her eyes softening. "He's... he's cool. He's the one person in my family who actually, like, gets me. He doesn't judge me for anything, even when I mess up."

Madison nodded, her eyes scanning the passing scenery. "Sounds like he's a good guy."

Xolani smirked, glancing at her. "Yeah, you'll see. He's a little blunt and unfiltered, but he's got a good heart."

They drove in silence for a few minutes, the hum of the car filling the space. Xolani's mind wandered back to that first Thanksgiving after she'd left home. She was fifteen then, no money, no family to turn to, but she made it work.

As they neared the exit, Xolani's stomach tightened with a nervousness she hadn't expected. It wasn't about Madison, Madison had already been everything she needed. It was about her uncle. He was tough, he could be judgmental, and she wasn't sure how he'd react to Madison. But she wanted him to like her, to understand what Madison meant to her.

The streetlights flickered overhead as they turned onto the familiar road, and soon Xolani's uncle's house came into view. It was a small, two-story home tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac. Nothing fancy, but to Xolani, it had always been home. The porch light was on, and the windows glowed warmly.

When Xolani parked, she took a deep breath before getting out of the car. Madison followed her, and together they approached the door. Xolani knocked twice before the door swung open.

Her uncle stood in the doorway, tall and broad-shouldered, his graying beard adding to his intimidating aura. But when his eyes landed on Xolani, his expression softened.

"lani where the hell have you been" he said, pulling her into a tight hug. "I swear, girl, I'm gonna hurt you. Disappear on me again. I dare you."

Xolani laughed, the familiarity of it all making her feel a sense of calm. She pulled away and nodded toward Madison. "I know, I know Uncle, I'll explain everything but uh this is Madison. My... girlfriend."

Madison stepped forward, her hands tucked in the pockets of her jacket. She smiled, her nerves showing only slightly. "Hi, it's nice to meet you."

Her uncle's gaze flickered over Madison for a moment, assessing her. Then, without warning, he grinned, offering a hug. "Nice to meet you too. Xolani's told me a lot about you." He gave Xolani a look that made her roll her eyes, but there was a warmth there.

Madison took his hug, visibly relaxing. "I'm glad to finally meet you, too."

Once inside, the house smelled like food—turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes—and it immediately made Madison's stomach growl. It wasn't long before they all sat down to eat, the table full of hearty dishes and laughter. Xolani's uncle kept the conversation light, but his eyes kept flickering between the two of them, as if searching for something deeper.

"So, how'd you two meet?" he asked between bites of mashed potatoes, his voice gruff but not unkind.

Xolani glanced at Madison, who smiled softly before speaking. "Unc don't play dumb now you know how we met" she explained. "Wait so this is THE bestfriend??? But I thought-" Xo Lani cut him off before he could finish his sentence.

Xolani nodded, adding, "Yeah, it was a mess at first, but things just... worked out." She reached under the table to rub on Madison's thigh.

Her uncle seemed to consider this for a moment, nodding thoughtfully. "Good," he said, taking another bite of his turkey. "People like you gotta stick together, you know? No one's gonna look out for you like your own."

After dinner, Xolani helped her uncle clean up, leaving Madison to relax in the living room. She could hear the muffled sounds of their conversation as they rinsed the dishes. Xolani's mind drifted back to the past, how hard it had been to get to this point, how many nights she'd spent alone, wondering if things would ever get better.

When she returned to the living room, she found Madison sitting with her feet tucked up beneath her, scrolling on her phone.

Xolani leaned against the doorframe, her gaze soft. "You good?"

Madison smiled, looking up from her phone. "Yeah, just taking it all in. Your uncle's... cool. He's definitely a lot."

Xolani chuckled, joining her on the couch. "He's got his moments. But he's good people."

They sat in a comfortable silence for a while, letting the evening pass by. Xolani's heart was full, content in a way she hadn't felt in a long time. As the rain began to patter softly against the windows, she leaned her head on Madison's shoulder, feeling the weight of the world ease off her shoulders.

Madison tilted her head to look at her, and in that moment, everything felt perfect. She reached over, brushing a loc me from Xolani's face, and their lips met in a soft, slow kiss.

For a while, neither of them pulled away, as if the kiss was both a promise and a moment of peace. When they finally broke apart, Madison smiled, her heart racing.

"I'm really glad we're doing this," she whispered.

"Me too," Xolani replied softly, her eyes full of affection.

The rain outside only grew heavier, but inside, everything felt warm.
