Hunter's POV:

I sat outside the cave. It seemed to be the only safe place here, just as Luz had said. Willow had made a thorn vine barricade around the cave to protect us from anything. Specifically the giraffes...those terrified us

I was on first watch as the others slept. Even though we had woken up not that long ago, we figured it would be safer to rest up now since it was night time here because most animals would be sleeping

I sighed, keeping my gaze sharp. I was used to not sleeping that much due to my coven training, so I planned on staying awake the rest of the night and letting the others rest. After all, we just had to wait until Luz's powers were fully recovered so that she could teleport us back

I hummed for a moment, figuring we would need some kind of breakfast and wondering if I should go fetch something then deciding against it, not wanting to leave them vulnerable

Even though I had just met them, they meant so much to me. Uncle always said not to form connections as they would weaken me, but to be honest, I think he was wrong for once. If anything, they strengthened me. They're the first people I could call "friends"

A few hours passed, and I was still lost in thought, staring into the distance. I was so zoned out, I didn't realize Gus woke up, placing a hand on my shoulder

"Hey man" He greeted, yawning

"Oh, hey dude. Can't sleep?" I asked, turning towards him but still watching our surroundings out the corner of my eye

"That, and aren't you supposed to be waking Boscha up for second watch?"

"I decided against it. I've stayed up for a week straight before. It's nothing I can't handle. Besides, you guys need your rest" I responded

"Bro, you also need your rest. The amour you wear doesn't make you stronger. Only prouder" Gus spoke, seeming quite proud of his words

"Did you get that from a human book?" I asked, already knowing the answer to that

"No. I made that one up myself! Human sayings are super easy to understand" He puffed out his chest, looking prouder than before

I was surprised, but then again, Gus was smart. Alongside him and Amity, we could get through any situation with a perfect plan

"Well done, dude. You seem to be enjoying human culture better than...before?" My voice faltered as I noticed the figure of an extremely tall figure in the distance. It wasn't human shaped or anything like it. It's head towered over the bushes, and it's ears told me all I needed to know to figure out what I needed

"G-giraffe..." I muttered, pointing towards it. Gus turned his head in that direction too, his eyes widening at the sight before using a spell I assume Mattholomule taught him, drawing a spell circle and covering the cave in a rock wall

We both pushed our backs against it, breathing heavily. We tried to remain silent as to not wake the others up, but Amity, being the light sleeper she was walked over to us

"Hey blondie, Gus, why's the entrance closed up?" She yawned, and even in the dim light of Gus' light spell, we could see the curiosity on her face

"Th-there's a g-giraffe out there" Gus stuttered out as I nodded furiously, hoping the giraffe didn't notice us and wouldn't come eat the stone

Immediately, the glint of Amity's golden eyes shimmered lighter as her eyes widened too, almost immediately moving next to Gus and placing her back against the wall as well, drawing a spell circle, which I assumed was her covering the outside of the wall in a layer of abomination goo
