I opened my eyes and I was in the same dreary forest that I was in the last time. I looked around to see Alaina, Kyma, and Benjamin sitting atop a rock.
"You have done right by us and your destiny, Kylie." Benjamin said as he lifted up his head.
"If I'm doing the right thing, why do I feel so hollow?" I asked.
"This is not an easy role to endure. You will suffer, but you will also learn. Know that those closest to you will lead you down the right path." said Alaina.
"You said I would gain something from this obstacle, what did you mean?"
Kyma rose and descended from the rock, she situated herself right in front of me. These wolves were abnormally large. When they are on all fours, their shoulders are level with my head.
Kyma bowed her head towards me, I touched my forehead to hers. I felt every fiber of my being shift. I pulled away with a gasp.
"You can now heal others of any kind. Use this sparingly. It will weaken you for a period of time." Kyma stated.
Alaina rose from atop the rock and said, "You will face more challenges in the future that threaten to break the peace of your world. However, for now, you have earned yourself a time of rest. Harness your emotions into your power and you will soon be rewarded again."
I woke up from my dream, but the hollow feeling in my chest remained.
------------
I spent most of the next two days in my room, the rest of my time was spent at the hospital with Emily. Luckily, it was spring break and I didn't have school for a few days.
I told everyone who reached out to check on me that I just needed time to process and be with my family.
Emily came home from the hospital at the end of the second day of processing.
"Hey Em, can I make you anything to eat?"
"I'd really like some brownies, if you have some time?" she replied.
"Anything for you, Emmie."
I made the batter from scratch, then popped the pan in the oven. While I waited, I plopped down next to Emily on the couch.
Emily turned and stared at me.
I returned her gaze before asking, "What? Do I have a pimple or something?"
"Derek came to the hospital with you. Is he your boyfriend?"
I hesitated. "Not really. Kind of? I'm not sure."
"Don't bull shit me, Kylie."
"I'm not. We haven't really talked about it. I mean it was just kissing at first, but I wanted more. It was this whole big thing where we weren't on the same page about what we wanted and I got really mad, but thought we just needed time to process. He slept with some random girl, I saw them, then it got even worse. He opened up to me, I opened up to him, now we are on the same page, I think?" I sighed. "I think we're just trying to get to know each other better right now."
"What do you like about him?" Emily asked.
"Emily, you've seen him, what isn't there to like?"
"I know you, you're not superficial like that. What actually draws you to him?"
"Well, uh, I think when I first saw him, it was his eyes. I feel like I could look into them forever and never get bored. It's like there was a story just waiting for me to figure it out. He acts like a douchebag, but he's really just a big softy once you actually know him. He cares about me, he's always been there when I needed something. He challenges me to do better. Most importantly, it's always felt like he's believed in me, like he never doubts that I can do something."
"Oh, you're so in love with him." Emily said giggling.
"No I'm not! We're still figuring everything out."
"Ky, you're eyes lit up and you couldn't wipe that stupid smile off your face while you talked about him."
"Oh, shut up." I laughed off what Emily said, but she definitely wasn't far off.
My phone buzzed. "Well, speak of the devil."
Derek:
Come over for dinner tonight. I'll cook.
Emily grabbed the phone out of my hands, then groaned in pain from exerting herself.
She quickly forgot about it when she read the text, "KY! That's like your love language. Oh, he's the one."
Now I was definitely smiling like an idiot.
"Let me get these brownies out of the oven for you, then I'm going to get ready."
-------------
I started getting ready before I went over to Derek's.
I was panicking though because I didn't know if this was just going to be a chill night or if it was a date. Jax always says it's better to overdress than underdress, so, I got dressed up a little bit.
Nothing over the top, just a little more effort than I would usually put in. I also curled my hair and put on some makeup.
I finished getting ready and walked down the stairs to see Emily asleep on the couch with the pan of brownies sitting next to her. Even in her sleep I could tell she was in pain and she refused to take stronger pain medication from the doctors.
Derek told me that we can take the pain of others. I would completely heal her, but that would be too suspicious.
I softly sat down next to her, making sure not to wake her up. I gently grabbed her arm and focused. My veins turned black as I absorbed her pain. For me, it was slightly uncomfortable, but for her, I can only imagine. As soon as I was finished, I saw her face relax a little bit.
I leaned in and gave her a kiss on the forehead, then made my way over to Derek's apartment.
