Lyn was still berating herself for the previous night when she walked into the kitchen that morning. What on earth had she been thinking?! Elijah was an original; someone to be feared and avoided. She should count herself lucky that he was helping her and Elena in the first place. And then she had to go and flirt with him. God, she was an idiot. She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't notice who was in the kitchen with her until she looked up from the freezer where she had been hoping to drown her sorrows in ice cream. "What the actual hell?"

John Gilbert looked away from the TV and held his coffee mug firmly in his hands as he faced his daughter/niece. "Good morning to you too, Lyn."

"It was not a good morning before you got here and it most definitely is not a good morning with you here." Lyn spat. "Now why the hell are you here?"

Elena chose that moment to walk into the kitchen as well. "Seriously, what are you doing here?" she asked, having overheard Lyn and him talking.

"Coffee." He answered plainly.

"We're not doing that." Elena denied his attempts to avoid the question. "We did that last night. No more avoiding. Why are you here?"

"Backup," Lyn demanded. "You let him in the house?! Who told you that was a good idea?" Elena looked at her with slight guilt on her face. Lyn disregarded that in favor of glaring at her biological father. To her, Grayson Gilbert would always be her father, nothing and no one could change that– especially not John Gilbert. All he was was DNA.

"I'm here to protect you both. That's all I can say for the moment." He told them.

"What do you mean that's all you can say?" Elena demanded.

"I'll tell you more when I'm convinced I can trust you." He stated boldly.

"Did you lose brain cells when Katherine stabbed you? Cause last time I checked, you're the one who can't be trusted." Lyn spat at him. Before he had a chance to rebut her statement, Jenna and Alaric came rushing into the kitchen.

"Oh god, I'm late." Jenna panicked.

"That's what you get for hitting the snooze three times." Ric told her with a chuckle. They both stopped in their tracks at the sight of John.

"What the hell?" Jenna called out.

"Good morning to you, Jenna. Alaric..." He trailed off.

"It's okay that I'm confused, right?" Jenna asked. "Because we were not expecting you, like, ever."

"I got in late last night. Elena let me in." John explained.

"You know," Ric began uncomfortably, "I'm probably just gonna take off." He spared a glance at the twins before he left the house.

"I'm still confused here." Jenna reminded them.

"I decided to come back and stay for a while."

"Not here, you're not." Jenna denied.
