Lyn couldn't tell if she was lonely or if she was just alone

Lyn couldn't tell if she was lonely or if she was just alone. Nevertheless, she made her way out of AP Calc and into the hallway, shoving things into her locker. Finally, she took a steadying breath and tried to calm her racing heart. She could do this; she always did, after all. With everything going on in her life, as strange as it might sound, school had become somewhat of a safe space for Lyn. It wasn't just because it was easier to avoid people like her sister in the school than it was at home. It was because at school she was in control. For as long as she could remember, Lyn had always been the top of her class. It wasn't something that came naturally to her, like reading emotions, it was something she worked at.

She had realized long before the Salvatore's arrived that Elena was the sun in the solar system that was her life. Hell, she had realized it long before she had turned ten. That was the main reason she started pushing herself so hard in school. She had wanted, no, needed to be the best at something. Just once she wanted to be above her sister. And it had worked; when she applied herself, whether doing extra credit work or burying herself in textbooks, she could pull off the extraordinary.

It had started off as nothing more than a schoolgirl seeking validation from someone who wasn't obligated to give it by the cause of being family. Then it spiraled. She began getting drunk on the praise her teachers gave her, high off of the good grades. By the time she had hit the end of her sophomore year, she was hopelessly addicted.

"Lyn?" She sighed at the sound of Stefan's voice. So much for being able to avoid people during the school day

"What do you want, Stefan?" She turned to face him, her bag slung over her shoulder.

Stefan looked at her, his green eyes unbearably sympathetic. "Two things. First of all, I want to apologize."

Lyn rolled her eyes. She knew this was coming. She had caught them red handed and she knew Stefan didn't have it in him to not try and fix things with her. "Go on," She allowed. "I'm listening.

Stefan seemed pleased with his ability to get her to talk. "Well, I'll start off by saying something that I'm sure you're used to hearing; you were right. Damon and I have been putting Elena ahead of you and we were wrong for that,"

"I'll give you points for telling me I'm right. I love hearing those words,"

"I thought you might. I want to promise you that I won't do it again, but I know that you'd call bullshit on that."

"Look at you, Salvatore. You're learning," She smiled. Damn her; he was getting through to her.

Stefan smiled too, also feeling her slowly warm up to his apology. "That's what I'm hoping for. You're my friend, Lyn and I've been doing a bad job at showing you that. We all have. I can't promise that things are going to be perfect all of a sudden, but I promise that I'll keep learning."

"I'll give it to you," She said, laughing. "I haven't heard an apology that good since Jeremy ate the face off my favorite teddy bear when he was four." Stefan smiled at her and she smiled back. "Wait... wasn't there a second thing?"
