The Unofficial Silent Book Club:

**This could be platonic or romantic.**

Near the university's campus lies a large but nice  café with public reading nooks. Mint Green café has a mix of wooden tables and cushioned chairs, soft instrumental music playing, and the smell of coffee and baked goods in the air. The reading area has a bookshelf with an assortment of books, creating a welcoming, tranquil atmosphere. There are both public as well as individual reading areas available for use.

For this reason, Muse A loves visiting the café as much as possible both to study away from the noisy commotion of the university's library, and to just quietly enjoy reading their favorite books.

Muse A sits in a quiet corner by a window, sunlight filtering through and pooling on at their table. A steaming cup of coffee accompanied by  a slice of strawberry cheese rests beside their open book. Their eye brows are furrowed in focus as they flip a page, visibly absorbed in the story.

Muse B enters the café, carrying their backpack. They place their order   and scan the area while they wait. Their eyes land on Muse A, and a flicker of recognition crosses their face. Muse A looks familiar—he's the student from their literature class who always volunteers to speak but seems just as content to sit alone and read.

Muse B picks up their pastry and hot drink and looks in Muse A's direction, hesitating for a moment before  deciding to approach them.

B walks up to A’s table, holding the small wooden tray with their right hand as their bookbag hangs on their left shoulder.

Muse B: "Hey, uh, is this seat taken?"

Muse A recognizes B as they both go to the same university and take quite a few courses together. However, A has never approached B though they have been interested in them for quite some time but have been unsure on how to approach B. This is because B is a   shy introvert while A is an outgoing extrovert. Though in all honesty, A is really an ambivert as it  depends on the social situation. Still, since they haven't actually talked to B, they decide to pretend to be a stranger hoping that this will make the interaction a little less intimidating for B.

A glint of curiosity is clearly visible in A’s eyes as they look up from their book.

Muse A: "Not at all. Go ahead. You can sit anywhere, I'm not waiting for anyone.

Muse B: "Oh, all right. Thank you."

Muse B sets their tray  down, feeling slightly awkward. In an attempt to counteract this, B decides to try making a bit of small talk.

Muse B: "So, un, I recognized you from Professor Morgan's class. You're the guy who made that presentation on 'Dante's Inferno' last week, right?"

Muse A: Chuckles softly, "Yeah, that was me. And you’re...?"

Muse B: "Just the guy sitting in the back trying not to get called on."

Muse A smiles, clearly intrigued.
Muse A: "Fair enough. Well, nice to officially meet you." They both briefly introduce themselves.

Muse B: "Muse B. So...what are you reading?"

Muse A: Shows them the cover. "It’s a fantasy novel. Slow start, but it’s getting good."

Muse B: "Mind if I join you? I bought a book too."

Muse A: Gestures to the chair right closest to them.

Muse A: "Be my guest."

Muse B timidly smiles as they gently set their tray down on the coffee table in front of them while dropping their bookbag next to their chair. The pair sit in silence as they read their respective books but Muse A does occasionally glance to the side to look at B.  Though nothing is really said between the two, they both enjoy each other's company and just like that, an hour flies by. Their quiet time is interrupted by Muse B's phone alarm going off. They nearly drop their book as they  hastily grab their phone from the coffee table.

Muse B: "Oh, my God. I'm so very sorry."

They quickly apologize, their face red from mortification cuz seriously, the fuck is this alarm anyways?! Only when Muse B glares at their device do they see the alarm's title.  Fucking hell, they forgot that they need to pick up a book from the campus library for a project that's due in 2 weeks.

Muse B: "Oh, sugar honey ice tea!"

They totally forgot about this shit. Fuck! Well, that's why alarms exist. They turn to look apologetically at Muse A.

Muse B: "I have to go now because I completely forgot that I need to get a book from the university library. " They hastily put their things away, and get up while swinging their bag over their shoulders.

Muse B: "Again, I'm sorry I interrupted your reading and-" But Muse A waves them off and offers the ghost of a smile.

Muse A: "It's all right, don't worry about it. It was nice having some company."

Muse B: "Oh, me too. Thanks for letting me join you even if we really didn't talk. But quietly  sitting next to someone and reading a book is nice."

Seeing how Muse B enjoyed their company, A makes their move.
Muse A: "You're welcome to sit by me again the next time you come to the café."

Muse B's eyes light up at that.

Muse B: "Uh, is that really okay with you?"

Muse A: "Of course. If it wasn't, I wouldn't have suggested it in the first place."

Muse B: "Okay, then. See ya next time!"

With that B quickly walks away only to abruptly stop as come back to A's table.

Muse B: "Um... If it isn't a bother, c-can I give you my number for when we meet again?"

B was nervous because they didn't want to sound creepy by asking for A's number given that they only really spoke to each other a little over an hour ago. Thus, they offered their own cellphone number instead. This makes A smile because they see that although Muse B is nervous, they went out of their comfort zone to actually ask to keep in contact.

Muse A: "Sure. Tell me your number and I'll send you a text so that you can add me to your contacts."

The pair exchange phone numbers and say their goodbyes, promising to meet again. Thus, this is how The Unofficial Silent Book Club began.
