"Gurgle, gurgle-"
Water rushed down her throat, squeezing the scant air from her lungs into a narrow space. The murky, foul-smelling sediment was stirred up by her unconscious thrashing at the bottom of the lake, making Jiang Yuan gag.
The surface wasn't far from the lakebed, but the entangling weeds and usually soft silt felt like reinforced concrete, threatening to trap her there.
-I can't die.
-I can't die.
-I can't die! With a kick, Jiang Yuan finally broke free from the weeds' grip. The moment she surfaced, the sunlight seemed to shine like a Buddha's blessing, celebrating her escape from a dire fate.
Realizing she had escaped drowning, Jiang Yuan belatedly felt a splitting headache, as if her head had been struck with a hard object, ready to explode at any moment.
Without hesitating, she relied on her barely passable swimming skills to slowly crawl ashore. It was then she discovered she was in a different world.
Instead of skyscrapers and bustling traffic, she saw towering trees, crystal-clear rivers, and a few scattered grey, dilapidated houses.
She looked up to see a few men dressed in ancient farming attire squatting by the willow trees not far away. When they noticed her, they huddled, whispered, and quickly left with their hoes.
Feeling a sense of caution, Jiang Yuan scanned her surroundings. Seeing only a few willow trees by the river, she chose the sturdiest one, furthest from the men, and started to walk towards it.
But as soon as she lifted her foot, she realized each step was difficult. Looking down, she saw her outfit had somehow changed from her office attire to a coarse cloth patched with various-sized pieces.
Having just emerged from the water, her clothes clung to her skin, accentuating her curves.
Supporting her head, Jiang Yuan dragged her heavy steps, trying to sort through recent events. At 23, she was a recent graduate from a renowned finance university. At 12, she experienced her first tragedy when her parents died, leaving her an orphan raised by her uncle.
She had always excelled academically and was a standout among her peers, catching the attention of many teachers. While others struggled to find jobs, she had already been recommended to a well-known domestic securities firm by her mentor.
Today was her first day at work, enough time to familiarize herself with her tasks. After work, as she left the company, she encountered an ugly-looking fortune teller who stared at her face before suddenly approaching. She frowned and turned away, but he abruptly placed a blue jade pendant in her hand and smiled meaningfully.
Having encountered street scams before, she intended to throw the pendant away. However, before she could, a car sped towards her, leading to an accident...
When she awoke, she was in the water.
Jiang Yuan realized she had transmigrated-and it was a soul transmigration, as her body was not her own. Her mind harbored unfamiliar memories trying to surface, but the original host had indeed suffered a head injury, leaving her with no recollection of this world.
She held her forehead, trying to recall the events before she fell into the water, but each attempt brought a splitting headache. Her right middle finger tingled as if pricked by a needle, with something seemingly about to burst forth, yet upon inspection, there was no wound.
