Jing Anrui ignored Jiang Yuan's argument of innocence, turning his gaze to the confused Lin Kong with a playful expression, "Your wife says she's not afraid. How about you?"
Lin Kong looked up blankly, unsure what mistake she had made, having only glanced at the prince.
Seeing Jiang Yuan's calm demeanor, Lin Kong regained her composure, earnestly saying, "Since my wife isn't afraid, then neither am I."
In public, she needed to act mature, refraining from her usual self-reference as "Kong'er."
"Oh?" Jing Anrui's response was laced with amusement, subtly scrutinizing Lin Kong, his eyes twinkling with deeper mirth.
Fixing his gaze on Jiang Yuan and her companions, he instructed, "You three come with me to the residence. The rest, continue searching for that shadow."
Jiang Yuan had anticipated Prince Jing's intentions. Both she and Shiqi, familiar with him, knew nothing untoward would happen.
Only Lin Kong remained anxious, puzzled by Prince Jing's enigmatic "Oh," fearing they might end up imprisoned like with Wu Pengcheng.
Nervously clutching Jiang Yuan's sleeve, Lin Kong felt they had escaped a wolf's den only to enter a tiger's lair.
Jiang Yuan held her hand reassuringly.
They followed Jing Anrui to a heavily guarded compound, not the royal residence, as his estate was in the capital. This was merely a temporary stay in Yuanzhou.
Busy and overwhelmed, Jing Anrui cut straight to business, offering no pleasantries. With a glance at Jiang Yuan, he gestured toward the inner chamber, "Jiang Yuan, come with me."
Instinctively, Lin Kong moved to follow, but Jing Anrui, as if sensing it, kept his pace, instructing without a glance, "I have important matters to discuss with Miss Jiang. Attend to Young Master Lin and Miss Shiqi."
"Yes," guards quickly positioned themselves between Lin Kong, Shiqi, and the inner chamber.
Jiang Yuan reminded, "Kong'er, wait here."
Exchanging a glance with Shiqi, who nodded in understanding, Jiang Yuan followed Jing Anrui inside.
Lin Kong, left behind, anxiously glanced around, perplexed by their sudden legal entanglement, unable to even stay by her wife’s side.
Inside, Jiang Yuan found Jing Anrui leisurely sipping tea. As she entered, he remarked, "Since Bai Bo holds you in such regard, I reluctantly trust in your abilities."
His words seemed grudging, yet his gaze was not disdainful, but rather probing.
Jiang Yuan sat silently, understanding he wouldn’t have involved her if he truly doubted her skills. Clearly, he had thoroughly investigated them, though she wasn’t sure to what extent. His willingness to save them suggested he knew much.
Seeing her silence, Jing Anrui’s expression remained serious, "You’ve seen the refugee situation. I’ll soon return to the capital..."
He left the sentence hanging.
Meeting his inscrutable gaze, Jiang Yuan quickly looked away, responding, "Whatever Your Highness requires, I will do my best."
