Jiang Yuan remained silent, her expression enigmatic as she stared ahead. Song Keyan, seeing her like this, didn't rush to leave. Instead, she curiously probed, "Are you afraid that if Lin Kong recovers, she'll become like those men with multiple wives?"
Jiang Yuan was unafraid, confident, "She won't."
"Then what are you worried about?" Song Keyan pressed, like a persistent pest, unwilling to relinquish hope.
"Women tend to be ensnared by emotions, while men often value things beyond love. Perhaps when Lin Kong recovers, she might... change," Jiang Yuan pondered, glancing at Song Keyan, ready to listen.
Realizing she'd voiced such thoughts, Song Keyan blushed, "I wasn't cursing you. I was just stating facts."
"Thank you for the warning, Miss Song. I'll keep an eye on Kong'er," Jiang Yuan replied, playfully bowing.
For a moment, she considered revealing Lin Kong's true identity to Song Keyan, to prevent her from lumping Lin Kong with men when disparaging them. But she hesitated, fearing too many people knowing might complicate matters, and telling Song Keyan might give her more reason to linger, thinking Jiang Yuan liked Lin Kong because she was a man.
Song Keyan, flustered by Jiang Yuan's mock courtesy, stammered, "I... I didn't mean that."
Jiang Yuan nodded, feigning understanding, and coughed lightly, "Miss Song, I'll head back. It's cold; you should rest early."
"Alright." Song Keyan watched Jiang Yuan's retreating figure, turning back to the snow with a sense of loss.
Back in her room, Jiang Yuan shed her fur coat by the door, waiting for the chill to fade before approaching the bed. Lin Kong lay obediently, hands outside the covers. Gently, Jiang Yuan tucked them in.
Afterward, an odd sweetness filled her heart. Without knowing why, she leaned down, softly kissing Lin Kong's smooth forehead.
The kiss was light as a dragonfly on water, a mere brush of lips against skin.
As Jiang Yuan, ears pink, lifted her head to leave, she noticed Lin Kong's eyes fluttering beneath closed lids. Her face flushed as if burned.
Flustered, Jiang Yuan quickly lay down, pulling the covers over herself, pretending nothing had happened.
Lin Kong slowly opened her eyes, touching her still-warm forehead. She had feigned sleep to surprise Jiang Yuan, not expecting to be surprised herself.
Did her wife kiss her again?
Smiling, Lin Kong teasingly poked Jiang Yuan's shoulder, "Wife, your lips are so soft. Kiss Kong'er again?"
"No," Jiang Yuan grumbled.
Turning away, Jiang Yuan felt embarrassed at being caught in a moment of impulse, contemplating sleeping separately to avoid facing Lin Kong.
Drawing from past experience of being denied shared sleeping quarters, Lin Kong persistently poked Jiang Yuan's back, softly pleading, "Wife, please?"
Jiang Yuan remained firm, "No."
Expecting Lin Kong to relent, Jiang Yuan was surprised when arms wrapped around her, pulling her into a warm embrace.
