Jiang Yuan wiped her eyes, confirming that Lin Kong’s eyelids were indeed fluttering before quickly standing up to watch Lin Kong’s face, unsure where to place her hands and feet.
After three days in bed, Lin Kong had noticeably lost weight, her once slightly chubby cheeks now angular, exuding an aura of detachment and aloofness.
Jiang Yuan stared at Lin Kong’s closed eyes, her palms unknowingly sweating. In their relationship, she had always been in control, with Lin Kong the one uneasy before her.
But now everything felt different. It was her first time feeling anxious, her first time feeling helpless, and her first time feeling fearful facing Lin Kong.
She watched intently, sweat pooling in her palms, as Lin Kong’s eyelids fluttered once more, then stilled.
In that moment, her rising emotions dulled, leaving only the hope for Lin Kong’s awakening. Jiang Yuan wasn’t one to be overly cautious. Bending over, she softly called, "Kong'er?"
Perhaps the room was too quiet, for her voice seemed to echo, her heartbeat loud in her ears. Yet there was no response, only silence.
Lin Kong lay motionless, and Jiang Yuan’s disappointment was clear, her previous worries and helplessness temporarily pushed aside.
Her eyes stung, nose tingling. Lin Kong had slept for three days without response. Now, all she wanted was for Lin Kong to wake, everything else could change with time.
Resolute, Jiang Yuan leaned over to adjust Lin Kong’s blanket. Lin Kong’s breath brushed her face, and she couldn’t suppress the tears that fell, forming a small puddle on Lin Kong’s eyelid.
Realizing this, Jiang Yuan reached to wipe it away, but paused, noticing Lin Kong’s eyelashes flutter slightly—a sign of waking.
Unsure how to react, she hesitated, unsure whether to retreat and risk seeming overdramatic or stay and risk being seen as taking advantage.
As Jiang Yuan hesitated, Lin Kong slowly opened her eyes, initially blank, then uncertain, finally settling on confusion.
The anticipated sense of detachment swept over her, catching Jiang Yuan off guard despite her preparation, leaving her frozen.
"Water..."
The voice was weak and clear, lacking its usual softness.
Jiang Yuan snapped back to reality, retrieving a cup of water and helping Lin Kong sit up to drink.
Lin Kong, adjusting to the sensation, sipped carefully from Jiang Yuan’s hand.
After finishing, her lips, once dry, now glistened like cherries after rain, full and inviting, though she remained unaware.
Jiang Yuan noticed but was too preoccupied to appreciate it. Pushing aside her melancholy, she turned to place the cup down when Lin Kong suddenly embraced her from behind, whispering a familiar "Wife" by her ear. The cup fell with a dull thud.
Jiang Yuan froze, her mind a whirlwind of emotions, like fireworks exploding, leaving her dazed.
Turning slowly, she instinctively embraced Lin Kong, inhaling her familiar scent, murmuring, "Kong'er..."
