The bed was a mess, the blankets tossed about, the pillow lying on the floor, and the small drawer by the cabinet left ajar. The room bore clear signs of being rummaged through.
Jiang Yuan observed the disarray, frowning slightly. She had a bit of a compulsive need for tidiness, so her room was always neat when she left. Clearly, someone had been here, and it wasn't a family member.
She looked around, noticing Lin Kong was also absent, which made her anxious. Just as she stepped out to look for Lin Kong, she heard her voice, "Wife."
Jiang Yuan exhaled quietly, bringing Lin Kong into the room. She closed the door, replaced the pillow on the bed, and asked, "Kong'er, where were you?"
"Wife, when I came into the room, I saw someone dart past the window, so I chased after them. But they were too fast, and I lost them, so I came back to find you," Lin Kong replied, pouting with disappointment.
She had wanted to catch the person, surprised they could outrun her.
Jiang Yuan glanced at the window, tidied Lin Kong's hair, and advised, "Next time, don't chase after anyone. What if they were luring you out? It's dangerous outside."
"Oh? Kong'er will listen to you from now on," Lin Kong replied, touching her hair, confused. "I didn't think much, just saw a shadow and ran after it. But they were faster than me."
"Faster than you?" Jiang Yuan asked, puzzled. Initially, she hoped it was just a thief, but now she realized it was more complicated. What were they looking for?
Their home was poor, without valuables. Jiang Yuan knew the room's contents well, and the silver she earned was safely in the vortex, so there was nothing worth stealing.
"Hmm," Lin Kong confirmed, seeing Jiang Yuan in thought. "Wife, are we going to the city tomorrow? Kong'er wants a sugar figurine."
Returning to the present, Jiang Yuan replied, "I'll buy you one in the city. Let's sleep early; we leave in the morning."
"Okay."
That night, Jiang Yuan couldn't sleep, worried about being followed earlier. She realized they were targeted as soon as they entered the city but couldn't determine whether it was Lin Kong or her they were after.
If it was her, it might be the murderer who killed the original owner. If it was Lin Kong, what made her a target?
The worst-case scenario was that they were both targets.
The best case was that it was Shopkeeper Bai, interested in her preservation method.
Lin Kong, also unable to sleep due to the upcoming trip, had grown familiar with Jiang Yuan's temperament over time, knowing she wasn't truly angry even when she seemed so.
Remembering something overheard from Dashan earlier, Lin Kong tugged Jiang Yuan's sleeve, "Wife, Kong'er wants to consummate."
"..." Jiang Yuan couldn't understand Lin Kong's obsession with consummating, especially since she was naive about such matters. She explained helplessly, "We're both women; we can't consummate."
Lin Kong didn't believe her, moving closer and poking Jiang Yuan's shoulder, "Dashan said once married, you can consummate. Kong'er and wife have been married for a while, and we haven't consummated."
