As Jiang Yuan and Lin Kong stepped outside, they encountered several women wailing loudly, their cries echoing with enough force to make Jiang Yuan's ears ring. Lin Kong initially wanted to speak with Xu You, but Jiang Yuan had warned her not to associate with him, and since Xu You ignored her last time, she remained silent, merely watching the scene unfold.
Jiang Yuan, however, remained composed, observing the two seemingly dying people on the ground, Xu You, who was quite cunning for his age, and the burly men standing behind him.
Is this what they call a medical dispute?
Jiang Yuan and Lin Kong stood at the entrance, maintaining an indifferent demeanor, waiting for Xu You to explain the situation. The two men on the ground were Xu You's family members, and he had brought them here, leading Jiang Yuan to suspect what kind of malicious intent Renhe Pharmacy might have.
The women, upon seeing Jiang Yuan, seemed to take a cue and began crying even louder, hurling accusations about the misdeeds of Lin's Pharmacy. They were performing a tearful drama, complete with sobs and accusations.
After they finished their tirade, Xu You stepped forward, speaking with a youthful yet composed voice, "Manager Jiang, these two workers of mine have always had a fondness for food. Yesterday, they ate something from your so-called preservation cabinet, and last night they suffered severe abdominal pain. After visiting your pharmacy for medicine, they ended up like this today. Our Renhe Pharmacy has always been a beacon of healing, and my father sent me to seek an explanation for our workers."
He spoke with reason and decorum, like a young gentleman versed in etiquette. Yet, the fleeting malice in his eyes suggested he didn’t truly care about the workers' fate.
Jiang Yuan watched Xu You's performance with a hint of pity for Lin Kong, who had played with such a companion for half a month without being led astray. It was hard to tell whether Xu You was too good at hiding his true nature or if Lin Kong was simply too naive.
The two workers convulsed again, foaming at the mouth.
Jiang Yuan frowned, recognizing that their symptoms seemed genuine, yet she doubted it was due to her food or medicine. It resembled epilepsy from modern medicine.
Remaining calm, she whispered something to Lin Kong, who nodded and went inside, while Jiang Yuan continued to face the crowd with a stoic expression.
The onlookers began to gossip, their chatter filled with judgments about Lin's Pharmacy, attacking its ethics and Jiang Yuan's character. Some even called for the pharmacy's closure to protect Xu Prefecture's residents.
Nearby merchants joined in, taking this opportunity to express long-held grievances. How could a country girl like Jiang Yuan, accompanied by a foolish assistant, thrive in Xu Prefecture, causing resentment among the locals?
The instigator of this situation clearly understood human nature, exploiting the tendency to resent others' success.
Jiang Yuan waited patiently for the uproar to subside, then calmly questioned, "If it's a matter of life and death, why not take them to your renowned Renhe Pharmacy for treatment? Is it merely a name, incapable of handling such a minor ailment, forcing my small pharmacy to intervene?"
A pharmacy, by definition, sells medicine. Patients bring prescriptions from other doctors to purchase medicines here. She had hired a doctor to prevent misuse of prescriptions.
