"You think I cheated on you?" His voice was low, hoarse, as if it had been a long time since he'd spoken the words. "I never needed to do that, Erica." He took a step forward, his gaze piercing hers. "If I wanted, I could have anyone I want. But I wasn't interested in anyone... apart from you."
Erica stood frozen, her heart racing as she tried to make sense of the storm of emotions in his eyes. Her hands trembled at her sides, the weight of his words suffocating her.
"And if there had been someone else in my life," he continued, the bitterness in his tone cutting through the air, "I know you think I could trade anything for business, but the truth is, Erica... I would've never married you if I was having an affair. Never."
His voice cracked slightly as the words fell from his lips, the rawness of his confession making her feel small, helpless.
"You know," Kabir's voice softened, a distant, painful memory creeping into his words, "My dad loved my mom, or so he always said. But he wasn't loyal to her. He had affairs, but he never treated her badly... He was always good to her but I've seen my mom cry, Erica. I've seen her break. And I can't be like that. Not to you, not to anyone. I can never betray a woman who means as much to me as my mother did." His words trembled, but his resolve was strong. "I'm not that kind of man."
Erica felt a lump form in her throat, a tear slipping down her cheek despite her attempts to hold it in. Kabir's words, so raw and unguarded, made the pain in her chest deepen.
