---------------------------------------------------------The quiet murmur of conversation filled the room as Erica sat across from Diva and Yash, both of them deep in their animated discussion, the laughter of both the families were ringing out in the atmosphere. Erica offered them a faint smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. If only the circumstances were different Kabir must have been here with her.
Her thoughts were interrupted when Yash's family asked after Kabir. Erica stiffened, a tight smile plastered on her lips as her mother quickly stepped in with a convenient excuse.
"Kabir's at an important meeting," her mother said smoothly "You know how it is with such a big businessman. He's always tied up."
The other family members nodded understandingly. As the conversation continued, Erica was just seated there crowded with her own thoughts . It was then that the sound of a car pulling up outside broke through her spiraling thoughts. Erica's breath caught in her throat as it was Kabir's car.
She stood up abruptly, her heart racing thinking he must have come ,expecting him to walk through the door. But it wasn't Kabir. It was the driver, stepping in with a large bouquet of flowers, his face impassive as he handed it to Yash's mother.
"Kabir sir sends this bouquet for the would-be groom," he said, his voice polite but distant. "He also asked me to convey his best wishes to you both."
Erica watched, a hollow feeling spreading through her as the driver turned and left. Yash's mother didn't seem to notice Erica's reaction.
"Arre, what was the need to send it separately? Erica could have brought it, no?" she said with a casual smile, examining the bouquet with mild amusement. "But this is sweet, no?"
Erica also gave her a fake smile ...but in her heart she knew ..why he send it separately.... everything is making her feel like he was slowly cutting all the ties ....
After Yash and his family left, Erica found herself alone on the terrace, staring out at the quiet expanse of the evening sky. In her hands, she held the divorce papers-the ones she had left here . She traced Kabir's signature with trembling fingers, a surge of guilt and sadness rising within her. The reality of what had happened, the distance between them, weighed down on her like a ton of bricks.
Her eyes blurred with tears as she remembered the day she had made him sign those papers.
With a sharp intake of breath, Erica pulled out a lighter from her pocket. She held the divorce papers over the flame, watching as they caught fire. The smoke curled upward, and with a final flick of her wrist, she tossed them into the wind, watching them disintegrate into ash.
A sob caught in her throat, and she crumpled to the ground, tears falling freely. *What have I done?*
Her mother's footsteps on the terrace brought her back to reality. Without a word, her mother sat beside her, her hand gently resting on Erica's shoulder, a familiar, comforting touch.
"Don't cry, beta," her mother said softly, her voice filled with concern. "Everything will be okay."
Erica looked up, her face blotchy with tears, but her voice was shaky. "Mom... Kabir... *wo maan to jayega na*?" She wiped her eyes, as if the question itself might bring some answer, some reassurance that the distance between them was only temporary.
Her mother cupped her face, her touch warm but filled with quiet sadness. "Erica, he's hurt. That's why he's angry. You did wrong to him, but you've always been his world. Keep trying, my dear. He will forgive you."
