Sunlight streamed in through the window, brushing against Erica’s face. She slowly opened her eyes to the sight of Kabir standing in front of the mirror, adjusting his hair. He was fully suited up.
“Get ready... it’s already late!” he said, glancing at her through the mirror.
Erica simply nodded.
They sat in the car—Kabir was driving while talking on the phone. Erica kept stealing glances at him, wanting to say something, anything... but the words refused to come. The ride passed in silence, heavy with unspoken thoughts. By the time she had finally mustered the courage to speak, they had already reached home. Kabir opened the door on her side.
“I’m getting late for office,” he said quickly, rushing back to the driver’s side and driving off.
He didn’t even give her a hug. Erica stood there, watching him leave, her heart heavy. It’s actually very late for his office, she thought, trying to justify the coldness.
She walked inside. All day long, her thoughts kept circling around what had happened between them. There was a strange mix of happiness and nervousness stirring in her chest.
She wanted to talk to him.
So she waited.
Night fell. Kabir still hadn’t returned. Sitting in his room, Erica kept looking out at the mansion gates. Hours passed. Eventually, sleep claimed her as she drifted off on the couch near the window.
At midnight, Kabir finally returned. He saw her curled up, fast asleep on the couch. Silently, he went into the washroom, took a shower, changed his clothes, and then came back. He picked her up gently. Erica instinctively curled into his embrace, but didn’t wake. He laid her down on her side of the bed, and they both fell asleep.
The next morning, when Erica woke up, Kabir was already gone.
A pang of sadness settled in her chest. The thought that he might be regretting what had happened haunted her. Determined not to let it linger, she made up her mind—she had to talk to him.
That night, she walked into his office room. Kabir was buried in files.
“Kabir, I want to talk,” she said.
“Hmmm... say, I’m listening,” he replied without looking up, his tone casual.
“Kabir... are you... are you ignoring me?” she asked, swallowing down a sob.
“No,” he said, shaking his head lightly. “Why would I?” He finally looked up. Their eyes met.
Erica’s gaze was filled with raw, vulnerable emotion. His eyes remained as unreadable and distant as ever.
“After th...e... the night,” she stammered, her breath shaky.
“Wasn’t it supposed to happen between us?” he said bluntly.
“Nothing is strange here, Erica. So don’t race your mind. And if you’re done... can I get back to work? It’s really important,” he added, his voice cold and detached.
