The following weeks were very exhausting for Taehyung. After Jennie was in a serious car accident, she had to stay in the hospital for several weeks, where she was under constant medical supervision. Although the doctors assured him that Jennie and their daughter were fine, Taehyung couldn't help himself as fear consumed him every second.
The first two weeks were extremely difficult. Taehyung immediately canceled all the conferences and business appointments he had scheduled.
Even though these were important projects that had taken him months of work to prepare for. It wasn't a priority now. He decided to work from home so that he could be close to his sons, take care of them, and create the most stable environment for them.
He was most relieved when aunt flew in to help him care for the boys and the household. Thanks to her support, he managed his daily worries a little better, yet he remained mentally tense and exhausted.
His head was constantly working at full speed - one moment he was attending to his sons, the next dealing with work matters, and the third he was looking for any information about the person responsible for the accident. The fact that the culprit had fled the scene infuriated him so much that he hired the best investigators to find him and bring him to justice.
Despite the hectic day, he stopped in the evening when he was putting his sons to sleep. He sat on the edge of their bed and watched them sleep quietly.
He saw hope in their innocent faces, which gave him the strength to go on. Every night he promised himself the same thing: that he would never allow them to be put in further danger, and that he would do anything for them.
As he stroked the younger of the boys' hair, he leaned down and whispered in a barely audible voice, "Don't worry, I'll protect you. Both of you. I'll never let anyone hurt you." Then he looked at the other boy, who was sleeping peacefully, and added: "You are the most precious thing your mommy and I have."
There was pain in his voice, but also determination. After a moment, he quietly stood up and looked at them one last time before turning off the lamp by their bed.
Closing the door to the nursery, he headed into the den. All was quiet, too quiet.
He sat down at his desk, where a pile of unfinished papers awaited him, but work was the last thing he had energy for. Although he had the opportunity to immerse himself in numbers and plans, his mind was elsewhere.
He rested his elbows on the desk top and propped his head up with his hands. When he was alone for a while, his thoughts always wandered to Jennie.
He remembered her smile, how tightly she could hold his hand when he needed support. The image suddenly hit him, as if he could feel her beside him again.
He missed her more than he could admit. He felt an emptiness that even the love of his sons couldn't fill. Every day he visited her in the hospital, if only for a few moments, to make sure she was really okay.
The sight of her lying in the hospital bed caused him pain and relief at the same time - she was alive. Their unborn daughter was alive. And that was enough to make him believe that they would make it through this fight together. But still, he was drawn back to the hospital, even at this late hour.
As if just by being closer, he could protect her and their child from any further danger. His hand wandered to the phone on the table. He held it in his hand for a moment, wondering if he should call her doctor, even though he knew he wouldn't hear anything new.
Finally, he put the phone down and stared out the window into the darkness of the night. He sighed and rubbed his tired eyes.
His thoughts kept pulling him back to what had happened. Images of the accident kept coming back to him, even though he hadn't been there. What he'd heard from the doctors and the police was enough - the car Jennie and her son had crashed into had disappeared without anyone on the scene providing assistance. The cowardice and recklessness had left him with a bitterness that was growing.
