Meeting Heeseung was damaging to Sunghoon's discrete world.
Initially, Sunghoon befriended Heeseung casually. Heeseung’s cool, calm, and collected personality matched Sunghoon’s preferences, and his affluent background made him even more suitable as a friend in Sunghoon's eyes.
It was evident that, beyond being Sunghoon’s friend, Heeseung had a special interest in Jake. Surprisingly, Sunghoon entertained the idea of them getting closer. He found it amusing to see Jake flustered and annoyed by Heeseung's persistence. In fact, it was satisfying, because no matter how persistent Heeseung was, Jake only saw him as a face of trouble.
Things were fine—until they weren’t. Soon Sunghoon began to realize Jake was slipping away. And from that moment on, things only worsened.
Midway through the year, Sunghoon and Jake’s mother passed away.
The emotional damage was excruciating, especially for Jake. He had lost his sole source of strength—his beloved mother, the person he had lived most of his life with.
Jake cried day and night, to the point of being hospitalized for an entire week. When he returned to school, he and Sunghoon pretended as if nothing so tragic had happened in their lives. Yet despite his efforts, Jake’s façade was slipping, leaving room for Heeseung to notice the cracks in his behavior.
At this vulnerable time, Heeseung offered Jake a shoulder to cry on and a space to lighten his chest.
Naturally, Jake’s hidden feelings for Heeseung began to surface. It was then that Sunghoon realized he was losing his own battle.
All this time, Sunghoon sank deeper into self-pity. This overwhelming feeling made him believe the universe was against him. It wasn’t just Jake who had lost their mother—Sunghoon had too. While he wasn’t as attached to her as Jake, she was still someone he didn’t hate.
Sunghoon couldn’t shake the feeling that it was unfair how much attention Heeseung was giving Jake. They were both supposed to suffer together. If he was grieving, Jake should be too. Instead, it felt like Heeseung was pulling Jake away, leaving Sunghoon behind.
Anger boiled inside him when he discovered Jake and Heeseung were meeting secretly behind his back. This discovery fueled his resolve to make sure no one, especially Jake, would wrong him ever again.
Sunghoon urged Heeseung to confess his feelings, only to expose him to his family two weeks later. At the same time, he manipulated Jake, planting false ideas about Heeseung's intentions while continuing to threaten and punish his younger brother.
After Heeseung was forced to leave, Sunghoon committed an unforgivable act by molesting Jake. He convinced himself in his twisted mind that this was what Jake wanted from Heeseung all along.
Jake was left shattered—like a broken toy no one would want because it was too damaged. And it was precisely for this reason that Jake felt he could never escape. For the next six years, Jake’s life was controlled by the only person willing to keep him—Sunghoon.
Sunghoon believed he was doing charity by providing Jake with shelter, ignoring the fact that he was the one who had broken him in the first place.
---
Years later, Sunghoon sat in a detention center, recounting the story of the injustices he had endured and why Mr. Sim was the true reason behind Jake’s misery. But Jake, seated across from him, was left in disbelief. He stared at his hands on the table as Sunghoon’s voice became muffled. He wasn’t listening—not anymore.
Thoughts clouded Jake’s mind. He glanced at Sunghoon, whose mouth was still moving. Jake’s heart ached—not from sympathy, but from anger.
“It’s all your father’s fault,” Sunghoon declared, his voice heavy with pity and regret. “If only he hadn’t done those horrible things to me, our lives wouldn’t have turned out this way.”
Jake’s voice cut through the air, hoarse and biting. “So what?”
Sunghoon faltered, perplexed. His eyes met Jake’s now fierce gaze.
For the first time in years, Sunghoon saw the same apathetic look in Jake’s eyes that he used to see in his father’s—a look he never expected after baring his soul.
Jake’s breath quickened, his chest heaving with suppressed emotion. His hands clenched into fists, knuckles turning white.
“For years, you made me believe it was my fault,” Jake began, his voice trembling with rage.
“Every single day, I tried to figure out where I went wrong—what I did to deserve this and how I could fix it.” His words came out in breathless gasps.
“I suffered every day, praying and hoping the Myung I once knew would come back. That someday, I could fix whatever I’d done to hurt you.” Jake’s eyes burned as tears welled, though he refused to let them fall.
Sunghoon sat in silence, grim-faced and unsure how to respond. For once, he simply listened.
“You’re a monster,” Jake said, his voice firm and unyielding.
“So is your father. You act as if he actually cares about you,” Sunghoon retaliated.
“THIS ISN’T ABOUT MY FATHER!” Jake roared, his voice echoing through the room. “It’s about me! You knew exactly how it felt,” Jake’s voice cracked, his pain laid bare, “and yet, you still chose to do those things to me. It wasn’t because of my father—it was because of you. Your own twisted desires. You wanted me to suffer.”
Jake’s finger pointed accusingly at Sunghoon. “You’re no different from him. And that’s just fucking pathetic, Park Sunghoon.”
With those words, Jake stood up, his body trembling as he made his way to the door at the end of the room.
“You say I’m just like that old bastard,” Sunghoon began, his voice breaking. His eyes, wet and red, brimmed with a mix of emotions Jake refused to acknowledge.
“Then watch your back—and Heeseung’s too—because now you’ll see how nice I actually was to you.” Despite the threat in his words, Sunghoon looked wounded. But Jake didn’t care. He walked out, slamming the heavy metal door behind him.
“FUUCCCKKK!” Sunghoon roared, flipping the heavy table with his cuffed hands as his rage consumed him.
---
Outside the prison, Jake stumbled to the roadside and threw up. His stomach churned as the weight of the conversation crashed down on him. He sobbed uncontrollably, clutching his chest as people on the sidewalk paused to stare.
No matter what he’d said inside, hearing Sunghoon’s story was unbearably painful. The thought of a young Sunghoon enduring such unspeakable violence crushed him.
“Why? Why?” he whispered to himself. Sunghoon was right—his father had ruined both their lives and countless others.
But the thought that hurt Jake the most was knowing he couldn’t save the boy he once called his brother whom he loved and admired. That boy must have been so scared. And yet, there had been no one to protect him from the demon who killed his family.
Jake fell to his knees, weeping until he could cry no more. After a while, he picked himself up and made his way home, carrying the weight of the past with him.
