••Maddie's POV••

"Will you please talk to me?"

I ignore the voice and wash my paint stained hands.

"Look--I'm sorry." Brianna sighs, "Just tell me what I can do to help you forgive me."

I look up and see her pleading pupils staring back at me. I quickly dart my eyes around the classroom filled with other chattering students.

"You want to know what you can do?" I ask harshly, "Leave me alone, that's what."

Brianna tried getting me to talk to her all weekend long. I ignored all her calls and texts, hoping she would get the memo that I wasn't going to answer. I guess it has come down to talking in person.

She grabs my arm, "Maddie--"

I raise my eyebrows and jerk away, "We're done here." I may be throwing away the only shot of friendship Brianna and I will ever have, but I really don't care. Not right now at least.

The bell rings and I rush to grab my bag. I make it to science class with time to spare, so I sit down and continue to read this book I've been reading. It's called Divergent and it's really interesting. The main character, Tris, reminds me of myself, mainly because she's trying to find out who she is, like me.

"Hey, bookworm."

I look up and see Romeo's dazzling smile, "Hey."

"Is that a good book?" His British accent makes me smile back.

I giggle a little, "You have no idea." I fold the corner of the page I was on and replace the book back in my backpack.

We hear the bell and Romeo takes his assigned seat behind me.

The phone rings and our science teacher, Mr. Martin, although I insist he looks like Albert Einstein, picks it up.

Romeo whispers in my ear, "Do you want to come play one on one with me after school?"

I open my mouth to speak when Mr. Martin calls my name.

"That was a call from the office, you're leaving." His gruff voice says. I get a few glances from surrounding students who are probably jealous that my school day ends forty-five minutes before theirs.

"Um...okay." I mutter, packing up my things and standing.

Romeo gives me a puzzled look and I shrug, then leave the classroom.

I wrack my brain for the explanation as to why I'm leaving early, but find none. I don't have a session with Dr. Kindle today, because I usually have those scheduled for Wednesdays and they're at 4:30. S0 that's ruled out. I have weekly appointments with my doctor for checkups, but that's not today.

I reach the front office in no time. I enter and don't find Karen or Gary, like I was expecting. Instead I see a woman wearing a hat and sunglasses sitting in one of the many chairs.

I turn towards the front desk in confusion and the young secretary smirks and nods her head towards the woman.

I slowly turn as the woman stands and lowers the sunglasses down the rim of her nose and winks.

"Jen?" I walk towards her slowly and she removes her hat and sunglasses. "Jen!"

I leap into her outstretched arms and cling to her for dear life.
