••Maddie's POV••
I wave goodbye to Romeo as the limo drives away. I'm really glad we still carpool after school, even though Jen would gladly pick me up.
As soon as I unlock the front door and walk inside, Jen calls me into the living room. I watch her pause the TV and sit up, "How was school?" She asks, setting her halfway empty bowl of popcorn on the coffee table.
I shrug. "It was...stressful." Jen looks at me with concern. "It's just that I have a lot of makeup work--I was only gone for a day and I have triple the amount of homework I normally do." I sigh, "And I had to give an excuse as to why I was absent."
"Oh, yeah?" Jen stands and I follow her into the kitchen. "What excuse did you use?"
"I told everybody that I was sick." This is only partly true. I did tell everyone that I was sick, except for Romeo. I filled him in at lunch. "Oh and I need a note from you confirming that's why I wasn't at school. Evidently my absence can't be excused unless I have a note from a parent."
"I am not going to lie!" She says laughing at the end. I give her my best puppy dog eyes and she sighs. "Look--" she begins. "I am not going to say you were sick, but I will write a note explaining that we had a family emergency."
I beam, "Thanks!"

"Whatcha working on?" Josh asks, leaning over my shoulder.
"World history." I answer glumly.
He picks up my paper and reads a question out loud. "What?" He says surprised, "You're in the sixth grade not high school--how are you supposed to know this stuff?"
"Well, they're these people--" I turn around to face him. "called teachers and they're supposed to teach you all this boring information, but the tests have nothing to do with anything they ever say."
Josh smirks, "Sounds kinda sucky."
"It's totally sucky," I nod my head.
"Hey!" Jen yells from the living room, "Watch your language you two."
I giggle and return to doing my homework and Josh begins to mess with some pots and pans in the kitchen. He's actually a really good cook--which is a quality Jen lacks. That's another reason Jen and Josh are perfect for each other, Josh loves to cook and Jen loves to eat!
An hour and a half later I put all my stuff back in my backpack and join Jen on the couch. I know I'm not done with all my homework yet, but since I was absent I have a few days longer to turn it in. Why not take advantage of the situation?
"Whatcha watching?" I ask, putting a piece of popcorn into my mouth.
She keeps her eyes on the TV, "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills."
"What's it about?" I ask staring at the screen.
Jen laughs a little, "Housewives." She looks over at me, "Are you done with all your homework?"
"Almost," I bite my lip. "I will finish it though, I promise."
Before she can say anything, Josh calls us to dinner.

I scroll through my Instagram feed while singing along to Pandora. Jen walks into my room talking to someone on her phone and pauses the song.
I scoff, "How rude."
When she hangs up the phone, she looks at me excitedly, "Guess who that was."
I pretend to think, "Obama."
She rolls her eyes, "No."
"Good, because we do not need all that drama." I laugh, "We have enough of that already." I mumble.
She laughs also, "Agreed--we don't need anymore," she winks. "I was talking to Patricia! Guess who has an audition for a Disney movie!"
"No way! Are you serious?" I scream.
She acts like she's offended and puts a hand on her chest, "When am I not?" Then she laughs, "Your audition is at the end of the week. Patricia is emailing me the script now."
"Okay." I smile, "Will you help me practice for the audition?"
Jen's an amazing actress--I've watched her act in person and on screen. If anybody can help me nail this audition, it's her.
"Of course I will, Madds." She smiles and gives me a tight hug. "I was thinking--I know the dance is coming up and I know you still don't know what you're wearing. Would you like to go shopping?"
"Like right now?" I ask.
"Well you have soccer practice everyday after school for the rest of the week. Now is probably the best chance we have at finding the perfect dress."
"Oh man." I take a deep breath, "I totally forgot that my first day of soccer is tomorrow."
Again, she gives me a tight hug and a kiss on my forehead. "You'll do great and I'll be right there the whole time."
That makes me feel better, knowing she will be with me the whole time. "Okay. Let's go shopping."
*Time Skip to Saturday*
I tap my fingers on my desk, waiting for the video to load. I'm trying to learn some new soccer tricks that I can do during games. A bunch of my teammates can do a ton of cool tricks and I want to fit in.
I'm also trying to distract myself from thinking about how I did in my audition earlier. Patricia told me we probably won't hear if I got it or not until Monday, but I still jump every time I hear a phone ring.
If I get the role, I will be playing a character who isn't really like me at all. Avia--who is very sarcastic and mean. Basically she starts off as the "it girl" in her school, but then her best friend turns on her and reveals a huge embarrassing secret about Avia--who starts to get bullied. Her parents send her to some summer camp that helps kids who are or have been bullied. She ends up meeting a boy and they "fall in love." In the end, on the first day of school, she has a ton of friends she met at summer camp and a boyfriend.
I was really excited to audition for this role, because I think it's inspiring how Avia changed for the better. It's also a Disney movie, so that means it will premiere on Disney Channel! The only thing is, if i get the role, I will have to kiss a boy who I don't know on the lips!
I think I'll get it though--not that I'm trying to sound cocky. I just feel very confident about this one. Plus Jen helped me prepare for the audition a ton! She let me watch Mean Girls with her, even though this movie isn't quite that bad. She even showed me a few acting exercises to help me get into character.
It's weird that I have been so successful so fast. Most actors and actresses get rejected thousands of times before they land a role. Jen was one of those people and some of the stories she has about her unsuccessful auditions are actually pretty funny. But they're also some people like me who got lucky early on--and believe me I'm thankful.
I've been thinking a lot lately about Marie. It came as a huge shock to me when I found out my birth mother had come looking for me when I was a baby. When Jen told me that Marie thinks she had shown up at her doorstep a year ago, I was dumbfounded. Why would my birth mother want to know about me? After all, she is the one who gave me up.
"Maddie!" Jen yells.
