•Maddie's POV•
My eyes slowly open and I see Jen standing over me, "What?"
Something flashes in her eyes, "Get up." I follow her into the kitchen and she takes a sip of her coffee. Catching a glimpse of the clock on the oven, I see it's about 7 a.m. and I know she didn't go to sleep. "I have a meeting with your publicist in half an hour."
She sets her coffee down, "We are meeting to discuss how we are going to deal with the press."
This past night has been nothing but hectic. After Jen discovered what was happening in the media, we quickly came home. I guess she's been on the phone with Patricia, my publicist, all night.
Sighing, I ask her a simple question. "How did this happen?" She doesn't answer, "Why did this happen? What did I ever do to deserve this much chaos?"
"Madds," Jen pauses, "bad things happen to good people every day." She puts a hand on my shoulder, "Willow is in the back yard waiting for you. She deserves to hear the truth and it would be better to hear it from you and not someone else."
Jen leaves me standing alone in the kitchen.
Taking a deep breath, I eventually walk out to the back yard, finding Willow seated on the exact bench my birth mother was sitting on just a week prior.
At the sound of the door closing, she turns around. Once she sees it's me she glances downward.
Slowly, I walk towards her and the bench. "It's true--the rumors I mean." I feel myself shiver and I see a different sky on a different night, but I'm in the exact same place. "She was sitting exactly where you are now."
Willow fiddles with her fringe purse, "You don't have to--"
"I didn't know who she was." A tear falls, "Romeo had just broken up with me." My eyes close, "I was surrounded by so many people, but I couldn't have been more alone."
I haven't spoken to or heard from Kace since the night of my party. Luckily, Camp Bully is still on Thanksgiving break. My director wanted to spend time with his wife and his newborn.
"You see, Romeo never failed to make me smile." Willow looks into my watery eyes, "Now he is never going to speak to me again. Kace lied. And Romeo believed him."
"You need to talk to him Maddie, you need to tell him what really happened."
I begin to laugh and I laugh harder and harder until it turns into crying and then into sobs. Willow's arms wrap around me and I feel safe.
"How could this happen?" I stare into my best friends eyes, "I'm almost aborted and I have to live with this," I raise up my left hand. "And then when I finally get adopted and start to have a life my birth mom shows up and ruins it." My eyes overflow with tears, "What did I do to deserve this?"
Seconds go by before I hear a response."You lived." Willow speaks softly, but surely, "and life sucks."
