Dahyun woke up earlier than anyone else, groggily wiping her face as she sat up in the interns' lounge. The cramped space had become their second home as exam season loomed closer. Despite the exhaustion, she cracked open her notes, determined to get some studying done before their shifts started. It wasn’t long before the quiet was shattered.
"Wake up, bitches! Our shifts haven’t ended yet!" Jihyo’s loud voice cut through the room. She strolled in, hair a mess and dark circles evident, and began hitting the still-sleeping interns with a rolled-up chart. “You want to fail your exams and get kicked out? Because that’s how you fail!”
Sana groaned from the couch. "Five more minutes, Jihyo. I promise I’ll study after that."
"Nope!" Jihyo yanked the blanket off her. "Get your ass up, or I’ll tell Dr. Im you slept through morning rounds."
"Ugh, I hate you," Sana muttered but sat up begrudgingly.
Jung Kook chuckled from a corner. "She only hates you because you’re right."
Yoongi, half-asleep with a coffee cup dangerously balanced in his hand, muttered, "You’re all too loud for 6 a.m."
As they prepared for the day, Jihyo slipped out of the room. She made her way to Jun Wan's office and checked her phone, smiling at his text:
"Breakfast in my office. Surgery now. Eat before rounds, okay?"Inside, she found a neatly packed breakfast on his desk. Sitting down, she started eating but accidentally knocked over a stack of papers. As she bent to pick them up, she noticed something glinting in his drawer. Curious, she started to open it when her pager buzzed.
911 – Dr. Im paging all available interns.
Dahyun’s voice came through her phone before Jihyo could even process. “Get to the ambulance bay, now!”
---
The scene at the ambulance bay was chaos. Dozens of doctors were already gloving up as paramedics unloaded patients. Dahyun arrived just as Jungkook stepped out, adjusting his gloves.
“What’s going on?” she asked, bewildered by the sheer number of medical staff.
“MCC,” he replied curtly. “Mass casualty collision. Freeway pile-up. They’re bringing in everyone.”
The ambulances arrived one by one, the injured rushed inside. The frenzy was almost rhythmic. But the chaos peaked when a final ambulance sped into the bay at a dangerous speed.
Dahyun yelled, "Move!" and pulled Taehyung and Dong-joo aside as it collided with another vehicle. The second ambulance toppled onto its side with a sickening crash.
Taehyung stumbled back, shaken. “What the hell was that?”
“No time,” Dahyun said, already rushing to assess the damage. "The patient in the first ambulance—his leg is impaled!"
Lisa emerged from the hospital and immediately took charge. “Dahyun, stay with the paramedics in the overturned ambulance. Check for survivors but wait for the fire department before you move anyone. I’ll handle the impaled patient.”
Nayeon called for Lisa from the other ambulance, leaving Dahyun alone to check on the overturned vehicle. She crouched by the shattered window.
Inside, Mark and Youngjae, two paramedics, were trapped. Mark was upside down in his seat, and Youngjae lay on the roof, bleeding heavily.
“Hey!” Dahyun called out, trying to keep her voice steady. “I’m Dr. Kim Dahyun. Help is coming. Can you both talk to me?”
Mark groaned, “Legs… can’t feel them. Am I—am I paralyzed?”
