The hospital room was suffocating with tension as Suho lay unconscious, his breathing labored and shallow. The rhythmic beeping of the monitors filled the silence, and the group of interns huddled together, their faces pale with fear and determination. Sana stood at Suho's bedside, clutching his hand tightly, her knuckles white.
Jihyo paced back and forth, her phone pressed to her ear as she tried to stay calm. "Jungkook, where are we on the heart?"
From the other end of the line, Jungkook's voice came through, steady but tense. "I've delayed the transplant team. They're holding off on harvesting for now, but it's only a matter of time before they start asking questions."
"Good," Jihyo said, exhaling shakily. "We're working on Suho's labs to push him to the top of the list."
Yoongi, seated on a stool near the monitors, tapped his pen against a clipboard. "We've got the spike in creatinine levels to make him critical. It's risky, but it's all we've got."
Dahyun nodded as she flipped through Suho's charts. "We just need Jungkook to handle the transplant team long enough for UNOS to verify his labs. Suho's got to get that heart."
Sana's voice broke through the murmurs. "What if it's not enough?" she asked, her eyes filled with tears. "What if I... what if I killed him?"
"You didn't kill him," Jihyo said firmly, though her own nerves were frayed. "You made a choice. Now we just have to make sure it wasn't the wrong one."
---
Jungkook stands firmly guarding the heart donor as he spoke with the transplant coordinator.
"We're seeing critical fluctuations in our recipient's condition. We have one hour to submit the labs and until then, none of you can take this heart."
"This heart doesn't even belong to your patient in the first place and it's only a matter of time until this donor goes into vfib," Dr. Lim replied, clearly irritated. "Delays like this are dangerous."
"I understand that," Jungkook said, forcing himself to remain composed. "But UNOS gave us one hour, so for the next." Jungkook looked at his watch "25 minutes, if you want to take this heart, you'll have to go through me first." Jungkook said with seriousness in his voice.
Dr. Lim sighed but relented. "You've got 25 minutes, Dr. Jeon. After that, we can't wait any longer."
Jungkook turned around immediately dialed Jihyo. "I'm trying to hold them for as long as I can, you only have 25 minutes. After that, I can't do more than this."
Jihyo stopped pacing, her heart sinking. "We get it. We'll make it work."
"It has to be," he replied grimly. "Get the labs submitted now."
---
In the hospital room, Sana was trembling, her panic barely contained. "What if the transplant team doesn't wait? What if they give the heart to someone else?"
"Sana, focus," Jihyo snapped. "We're not losing Suho. Not now."
Yoongi stood and approached the group, his tone calm but commanding. "We've got the labs. Let's send them to UNOS immediately."
Dahyun grabbed the tablet and started uploading the data. "It's done," she said after a few tense minutes. "Now we just have to hope it's enough to prioritize Suho."
Jungkook called back, his voice urgent. "UNOS confirmed the labs. Suho is officially the top candidate.
Yoongi looks worried after realising something "But there's one more problem."
"What now?" Sana demanded.
"Jun-wan can't operate," Jihyo said. "He was in a car accident, remember? Shoulder injury? He's in surgery now!"
The room went silent as the weight of Jungkook's words sank in.
"Then who's going to do the transplant?" Yoongi asked.
"I asked Dr. Lim Nayoung to scrub in," Jungkook said. "She's taking over Suho's case."
Sana's head snapped up. "Nayoung? She doesn't know Suho like Jun-wan does!"
"She's the best option we have right now," Jungkook said firmly. "You have to trust her."
---
The OR was alive with controlled chaos as Dr. Lim Nayoung scrubbed in. Her reputation as a brilliant but competitive surgeon preceded her, and the tension in the room was palpable.
"Let's move quickly," Nayoung said as the donor heart arrived. "We've got a narrow window to make this work."
The team worked with precision as Nayoung directed the operation. Back in Suho's room, the interns watched anxiously, their nerves stretched to the breaking point.
"What's happening now?" Sana asked, unable to tear her eyes away from the monitor.
"They're starting the transplant," Jihyo said, her voice tight. "If everything goes well, Suho will have a new heart by the end of the hour."
Minutes felt like hours as they waited. Jungkook remained on the phone, relaying updates from Nayoung's team.
"The heart's in," he reported. "It's beating on its own."
A collective sigh of relief swept through the room. Sana sank to her knees, tears streaming down her face. "He's going to make it," she whispered.
"Not yet," Jihyo said, though her voice softened. "But he's got a chance now."
---
Later that night, the group gathered outside Suho's recovery room. Inside, he lay unconscious but stable, his new heart beating strongly.
Jungkook finally arrived, his exhaustion evident. "He's going to be okay," he said simply.
Sana stepped forward and hugged him tightly. "Thank you," she whispered.
Dahyun patted Sana's back awkwardly, then turned to Jungkook. "You were right to call Nayoung. She did an incredible job."
Jihyo nodded, her expression conflicted. "We were lucky. But this can't happen again. We can't keep playing with people's lives like this."
Yoongi leaned against the wall, his arms crossed. "We got away with it this time. But next time... we might not."
The group fell into a heavy silence, each of them reflecting on the risks they had taken.
Inside the room, Suho stirred slightly, his new heart beating steadily as Sana sat by his side, holding his hand. "You're going to be okay," she whispered, her voice full of hope. "We'll make sure of it."
