A New World ~ Violentine

Chapter 27

Clementine's POV:

I woke up still in Violet's arms listening to her breathing softly and I did everything to stay still so she could sleep as long as she wanted, but not soon after she woke up.

"Hey pretty, ready to hunt?"

"Yeah. Let's go get the bows?"

"Sounds great."

We got up and got ready and went outside to see everyone up and preparing the walls and even more traps than I could've imagined.

"Louis, where's Rayne?"

"Her and Taylor went out to get more building supplies; they'll be back soon."

"Perfect."

"Me and Clem are going out hunting, keep everyone alive okay?"

He gave us a salute with a smile and turned around to keep working on mapping the ideas. After that we grabbed our bows and headed out. I waved bye to AJ who was watching the gates at the time and continued into the woods. Once we got out there I turned to Violet and started to discuss the plan.

"Okay here's the new trails, you go left and I'll go right. Find what you can and meet back here. If anything goes wrong for either of us we yell. We aren't that far apart from each other."

"Okay. Be safe."

"I will."

"Promise me."

"I promise."

She nodded at me and then we ran our opposite ways and I started to look for any animals I could find. I wasn't finding many tracks or signs of animals that had come past the path I was on. I kept running until I saw something wrong. Footprints, big footprints, and they were heading towards the path Violet was on. I started to get nervous but took a deep breath and tried to relax. That was until I heard Violet yell. My head snapped up and my feet started to move before I could even process what I was hearing and soon after I saw Violet struggling to keep a man off of her. I looked at his hand and he was holding a blade trying to stab her. I readied my bow and fired the arrow, hitting him directly in the neck. He fell to the ground gagging on his blood until he stopped moving and breathing. Violet looked up at me in fear gasping for breath.

"Who. Was. That."

"I have no idea."

"He's not from your past?"

"No. I have no idea who that is."

I looked over to the dead body on the ground trying to see if I knew who that was at all. The face didn't remind me of anyone. I was confused and scared as to why a random man was out in our woods.

"There is no way that we just escaped Lily and now someone else is going to fuck with us."

Before Violet could answer we heard multiple zombie groans. I grabbed her hand and yanked her up into a sprint.

"We need to go. Now!"

She nodded and we kept running as fast as possible. We ran back to the school and into the gates and saw everyone turn to look at us. At this point in the day Rayne and Taylor had returned with supplies and the rest of my squad from the Delta was awake and helping out. Navin looked at us with scared eyes.

"What happened?"

"There was a man out there. He attacked us. I have no idea who he is or where he came from."

"Is he going to be a problem?"

"No. I. I killed him."

"Oh. Good."

He smiled at me and turned back to nailing up the windows of the main building. I turned to Violet who was still catching her breath.

"You think we'll be okay?"

"Hopefully it was just him."

I nodded and then realized we didn't get any food.

"We caught nothing."

"It's fine. We'll go back out tomorrow farther out to scavenge houses."

I nodded at her and walked into the main building and up to my office. I took out the map and notebook from my desk and started to map and write out a plan for what we were going to do in the upcoming days. By the time I made some progress Omar yelled that it was time to eat. I finished what I was doing and made my way back out to the courtyard. For the first time since the raid we sat at the damaged tables and ate a meal together back in our home with more people added to our makeshift family. We were laughing and talking and it felt good to be back. I loved these people and I would do anything for them and this just reassured that. It was a wonderful meal that Omar had cooked once again. It was peaceful. That was until we heard a voice.
