March 23, 2007
Rebecca had cried herself to sleep. Even now, as she sat up in bed, her mind was spinning.
How could Rose say that? How could she just throw that at her—
Rebecca hated her. She had always hated her. But Rose had been right.
And then, her stomach dropped. What if the others had been looking for Rose? And she had just let her go—without even trying to stop her?
A nervous laugh escaped her lips.
"Well," she muttered bitterly, "it's their fault for keeping things from me."
They had left her out of everything. They had left her here as a doctor, told her they'd be working things out with Jonathan, and that was it.
No further explanations.
No calls. No, How are you, Rebecca?
She had been angry. Livid. And all she ever heard—**over and over from the radio and people—**was about Rose. Roselyn Hansley did this. Roselyn Hansley did that.
It infuriated her that no one ever changed the topic. And when the others finally returned, they still wouldn't say anything.
And Elijah? He had been in a mood so foul it was suffocating.
Rebecca had distanced herself from all of them. They had become distant with her. She felt like she didn't matter. Rebecca grabbed her phone.
She dialed a group call. No one answered. She called again.
Again.
Nothing.
Her fury burned hotter.
"Fine," she muttered through gritted teeth.
Without hesitation, she called the hospital, requested a few days of vacation, and immediately booked a flight.
She moved fast—cleaned her place, packed her bags. Then, she turned to the sealed plastic bag, inside the subdermal implant she had removed from Rose.
She hid it carefully. It was evidence, so the others would believe her. She gritted her teeth. She hailed a taxi, left her car behind, and headed straight for the airport.
As she sat waiting, she tried the group call again. No one picked up. She clenched her jaw. They were avoiding her. They didn't want to talk to her.
She tried one last time.
This time, she called Teresa directly.
The line connected.
"What do you want?" came Teresa's annoyed voice.
Rebecca's blood boiled.
"Tell her to call later," she heard Lucas say in the background.
Rebecca's eyes narrowed.
"So you're all together."
An annoyed sigh.
Riley. She knew she was on speaker.
"Are you guys with Elijah?"
The response was instant.
"They are," Elijah's voice cut through—harsh, angry, irritated.
Rebecca's heart clenched. The exclusion stung deeper than she wanted to admit.
"So you're keeping secrets from me now?" she snapped.
"You don't know how to keep secrets," Lucas butted in. Rebecca seethed. Her fingers curled into a fist. Fine! Is that how things are going to be? Then fine.
