On the drive home, Lucy had apologized to you. She knew she was out of line, but felt as if it was the only way to make her point.
"I don't want you sacrificing your happiness for other people," she told you, "especially at the expense of our father."
She wasn't wrong. You felt like you missed out on a lot because of your 'position' as the heir. But who were you to argue with Jude Heartfilia? You couldn't.
At dinner, your father stared at his paperwork, not daring to look at you or Lucy. It was the usual, he would only speak if it benefited him, while you and Lucy talked about the 'modesty' of that day's events.
You were about to tell something to Lucy, but as you opened your mouth, your father opened his.
"Y/n, don't forget that we have an event this Saturday." He told you, his voice booming.
"Another one?"
"Yes, another one. You only need one painting this time."
"Alright, I'll paint one."
"You have thousands, just pick one that's lying around."
"But I think those ones for me. I'd rather—"
"Do whatever, as long as you have one."
You nodded, going back to your food. Lucy looked unimpressed. "You could be nicer." She said under her breath, about your father.
He ignored her.
"It's okay, Luce." You assured her, waving it off.
"Maybe I should go to this event. I want an excuse to dress up." She smiled. "I'll bring Natsu, Gray, Erza—"
"Like hell you will!" Your father yelled, now paying upmost attention. "I will not have you jeopardizing this event! It's very important!"
"We wouldn't let anything happen." She rolled her eyes.
"You will not go." Your father warned. Lucy 'agreed,' but had every intention on going anyways.
When dinner was over, you started to head up the stairs to your room, but not before Lucy caught up to you. "Y/n, you should invite Sting."
"I couldn't." You shook your head.
"Why not? I know he'd like to support you."
"But... these events aren't really for me, they're for dad. I'm like... bait."
"Bait?"
"What old guy wouldn't want to watch a young girl parade herself on a stage?" You rolled your eyes. "I don't want Sting to see me like that."
"He's already seen you like that, no? The last time he went to one?"
"I... well—"
"I still plan on going. He can come with me and Natsu, and maybe... we can convince him to meet dad."
"I don't know, Lucy..."
"It'll be fine. Just do it."
"Maybe." You sighed, going into your room and shutting the door.
Your room was big compared to any of your friends' rooms. It was definitely bigger than Lisanna's. But then again, you lived on your own estate, practically. You were like a princess in a castle, at least, that's what it felt like. You lived the luxurious Heartfilia lifestyle, with maids and servants roaming the halls to do all of the housework, cooking, all the stuff that your father didn't want to do.
You never really liked the big house. It felt too empty, even though there were so many decorative items and artifacts that your father had bought at auctions. The only thing you did like about the home was your room, and the room your dad designated as your 'work room.' And even then, you preferred to paint in your room.
