The soft hum of the Miyagi-Do dojo filled the air as Cameron and Sam stood facing each other on the sparring mat. The sun streamed through the windows, casting long beams of light that danced across the wooden floor. The calm atmosphere was misleading, given the intensity simmering just below the surface.
Cameron adjusted her stance, bending her knees slightly as she waited for Sam to make the first move. Both twins had been sparring for what felt like forever, and despite their familiarity with each other, the tension was palpable. They were both trying their hardest not to really go at it. Neither of them wanted to hurt the other.
"You ready?" Cameron asked, her voice betraying a hint of playfulness.
Sam raised an eyebrow, matching her stance with a smirk. "You tell me."
They exchanged a couple of cautious jabs-nothing too forceful-each trying to gauge the other's movements without stepping too far over the line. Cameron's footwork was quick, light, but she hesitated as she blocked a strike from Sam. Sam, equally reluctant, adjusted her grip on her stance and nudged her twin back gently, offering a friendly smile.
"Come on, Cam. You can do better than that," Sam teased lightly, trying to goad her into a more aggressive move.
Cameron grinned back, but there was a flicker of hesitation in her eyes. "I'd rather not break my twin's nose, thanks," she said, sidestepping as Sam attempted a roundhouse kick.
Sam didn't miss a beat, narrowing her eyes and aiming a series of quick punches toward Cameron's torso. But again, nothing too hard. She wanted to win, of course, but the thought of really knocking Cameron back made her wince internally. They were both so evenly matched, but the unspoken understanding between them was clear: neither one was willing to go too far.
