Cameron sat stiffly in the cramped backseat of Kyler's car, arms crossed as she stared blankly at the glowing screen of the Drive-In theater. The movie flickered across the lot, its booming audio echoing through the rows of cars, but the action on the screen felt like nothing more than background noise. She could barely concentrate, sandwiched between Robby and Tory, both sitting tensely like they didn't belong there either.
Up front, Kyler and Rory were in their own world, practically doubled over in the driver and passenger seats as they howled with laughter, tossing pieces of popcorn at each other like they were the most hilarious people alive. Cameron resisted the urge to roll her eyes—again. The butter-slicked kernels landed on the floor, the seat, her lap, everywhere.
Kyler turned up the volume obnoxiously loud, the screen reflecting off the windshield as explosions lit up the night. Cameron shifted in her seat, feeling restless, already wishing she hadn't agreed to this mess of a night.
The tension was broken when Tory suddenly cleared her throat, her voice sharp but calm as she spoke up.
"I'll be back. Gotta use the restroom," she announced, shooting Cameron a meaningful glance that made her stomach twist.
Cameron blinked as Tory's eyes subtly shifted towards Robby before she slid out of the car and closed the door behind her with a soft thunk. Cameron watched her disappear toward the neon glow of the concession stand, the crowded Drive-In making her figure vanish quickly among the groups of teenagers gathered around.
"So," Robby spoke, breaking the awkward silence. His voice was quieter than usual. "Not into the movie?"
Cameron shrugged, still watching the screen, though her mind was miles away. "Oh, it's fine. I just had a shitty day."
Robby nodded slowly, his expression calm but curious. "I'd ask, but... none of my business, right?"
Cameron turned her head, the smallest smile tugging at her lips. The fact that he wasn't pressing her for details actually made her feel a little more at ease. "Yeah... but thanks anyway."
Before the conversation could deepen, Kyler's obnoxious voice cut through the air like nails on a chalkboard.
"Hey, bitch boy!"
Cameron's head snapped towards the commotion. Kenny, standing a few cars down, was juggling food trays—clearly running orders for the other Cobra Kai kids. His expression was tight, humiliated, trying to keep it together.
