The next day arrived quickly and I went downstairs in the living room. Dadu and Dadi were already sitting there engrossed in their own little world. My parents and grandparents are adorably cute couples and don't shy out from romancing. Hearing the voice of footsteps, they both looked up.
I greeted them, "Good morning Partner, good morning dadi." Dadi and Dadu beckoned me closer. Dadi patted my head saying, "Jeeti raho gudiya."
(Live long, doll.)
On the other hand, dadu high-fived me and said, "Good morning to you too, partner." We had grown very close over time and treated each other like friends. He was so sweet. I don't even know why I felt scared of him when I first met him. He always sides with me and pampers me a lot. I also enjoy the sweet banters he and dadi have.
Looking around, I noticed that I hadn't spotted maa. Plopping myself on the couch, I asked aloud, "Dadi, where is maa? Usually, she is already up by this time." Dadi looked up towards me and said, "Yes Ruhi, and she is already up. She is in her office." Confused, I asked, "Office? What is she doing in her office?" Dadu replied this time, "She is the owner of Ruheera and also runs a few NGOs for the betterment of our people."
I looked at him in astonishment. I never knew Maa worked! Voicing out my confusion, I said, "I never knew this." Dadi chuckled and said, "Well, Ruhi, you never knew it because she hasn't worked ever since you returned." Hearing her, I questioned, "Why?" Dadi replied, "She wanted you to settle down completely before she focused on her work. Even now, she didn't agree to go back to work, but we convinced her somehow. Moreover, with the upcoming party, she had a lot of pending work to do." I nodded in response.
Maa cared so much for me. Despite not being my biological mother, she never made me feel that I didn't have a mother figure. I don't know how I get so lucky.
I went towards the office to see Maa. Knocking on the door, I heard a "Come in!" and then entered. I saw her seated and greeted her, "Good morning, maa." She looked up from her documents and smiled, seeing me there. She opened her hands, and I rushed in to hug her. Her embrace feels like home and eases all my tensions. She patted my head and said, "Looks like someone is extra clingy today, ha?" I snuggled against her and said, "Mmm, I haven't got my daily dose of affection yet."
She chuckled and said, "Okay, come on, Ruhi, now leave me. I have to cook breakfast for everyone." I stubbornly shook my head in denial. Then, an idea struck me, and I said, "No, wait, I will cook for everyone today!" Her eyes grew wide, and she shook her head, "No, no shona. You will get hurt." Trying to convince her, I said, "Come on maa, I know how to cook." A frown marred her face, and she said, "How come you know how to cook? You are just a child!" I laughed nervously and said, "Maa, I am not a child. Moreover, I am a foodie, so I learned to cook."
She didn't look convinced so I added, "I promise I will be fine, maa. You just sit here. Also, this way I can also surprise everyone else in the family." She looked like she wanted to argue but then decided against it and just nodded. I did a mock cheer in return, "Woo hoo!" and bolted out of the office to the kitchen.
