The transformation in Anant was instantaneous and almost magical to witness. One moment he had been a towering figure of authority, his voice echoing through the office with barely contained fury, and the next, he was staring at his daughter with an expression that could only be described as pure, unadulterated love.
The anger that had been radiating from him like heat waves simply evaporated. His rigid posture softened, his clenched fists relaxed at his sides, and his face - which had been flushed red with frustration just seconds earlier - now glowed with warmth and tenderness. It was as if someone had flipped a switch, replacing the intimidating business mogul with a devoted father.
"Anika," he breathed, and his voice was so different from the harsh tone he had been using moments before that it sounded like it belonged to an entirely different person. The word came out like a prayer, soft and reverent.
The five employees who had been sitting in terrified silence throughout his tirade were now gaping openly, their faces reflecting complete and utter bewilderment. They exchanged shocked glances, clearly questioning whether they were witnessing the same man who had just been verbally demolishing their department's performance.
Mr. Gupta, the senior-most among them, actually rubbed his eyes as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing. The young intern who had winced earlier now sat with his mouth hanging open, staring at the scene unfolding before him like he was watching some sort of miracle.
"Anika, meri jaan (my life), what are you doing here?" Anant asked, completely ignoring the presence of his employees as he moved around his desk toward her. His entire demeanor had shifted so dramatically that he seemed like a different person altogether.
Ruhanika beamed at him, holding up the insulated bag. "I brought you lunch, Papa. Arvind kaka helped me make your favorite rajma chawal (kidney bean curry with rice). I thought you might be hungry."
The employees watched in stunned silence as their notoriously strict and demanding boss's face lit up like a child's on his birthday. Anant's eyes actually welled up with tears - tears of joy and overwhelming love for this precious girl who had walked into his stressful day like a ray of sunshine.
"You... you cooked for me?" he asked, his voice thick with emotion. "Meri pyari beti (my dear daughter), you didn't have to do that."
"I wanted to," Ruhanika said simply, and the genuine love in her voice made even the hardened business executives in the room feel emotional.
Mrs. Sharma, who had been hovering anxiously near the door, cleared her throat softly. "Sir, should I ask the gentlemen to wait outside while you..."
"Yes, yes," Anant said, waving his hand dismissively without even looking at the employees. His entire focus was on Ruhanika. "We'll continue this meeting later. Everyone, please... just give me some time with my daughter."
The five men practically scrambled out of their chairs, grateful for the reprieve but also completely bewildered by what they had just witnessed. As they filed out of the office, they kept glancing back at Anant, who was now fussing over Ruhanika like she was made of spun glass.
Once the door closed behind them, the employees clustered together in the hallway, their voices hushed but animated.
"Did you see that?" whispered Mr. Sharma from accounting. "He completely changed. I've never seen anything like it."
