Ruhanika
The pre-dawn darkness of January 20th was broken by the soft glow of diyas oil lamps being lit throughout the Agnihotri palace. Today wasn't just any day—it was the coronation of Divyank Agnihotri as the new Maharaja of Jodhpur, and simultaneously, the sixteenth birthday celebration of the twins, Ruhanika and Rudraansh.
I woke to the gentle sound of traditional shehnai music floating through my bedroom windows. For a moment, I lay still, letting the significance of the day wash over me. Sixteen years old today. The same day my eldest brother would officially become the ruler of our princely state.
A soft knock interrupted my thoughts. "Ruhi beta, are you awake?" Meera Maa's voice called through the door.
"Ji Maa, Yes, Mother I'm awake," I replied, sitting up in bed.
She entered with a warm smile, carrying a silver tray laden with traditional sweets and a glass of fresh lassi."Happy birthday, meri bachchi. How does it feel to be sixteen?"
I smiled, accepting her embrace. "It feels... significant. Like everything is changing."
"Today will be a day to remember forever," she said, her eyes twinkling with something that seemed almost protective. "But first, you need to get ready. The royal beauticians are waiting, and the ceremony begins in a few hours."
The next two hours passed in a whirlwind of preparation. Traditional beauticians worked on intricate henna designs on my hands while others styled my hair in an elaborate braid adorned with fresh jasmine flowers and gold ornaments. My lehenga traditional long skirt for the coronation was a masterpiece—deep royal blue with intricate gold embroidery, paired with heavy traditional jewelry that had been in our family for generations.
When I finally looked at myself in the mirror, I barely recognized the girl staring back. I looked like a real princess, not just someone playing dress-up.
"Anika," Papa's voice came from behind me, and I turned to see him standing in the doorway, his eyes filled with overwhelming pride and something darker, more possessive. "You look absolutely radiant, meri jaan. my life"
He was dressed in his own ceremonial attire—a cream-colored sherwani traditional long coat with gold embroidery and a matching turban adorned with a kalgi. feather ornament He looked every inch the former Maharaja he was.
"Papa, you look very handsome," I said, hugging him carefully to avoid disturbing my outfit.
His arms tightened around me, and I felt him inhale deeply. "Today, the whole world will see what I've always known—that you are the most precious jewel in all of Rajasthan."
There was something in his tone that made me look up at him curiously, but his expression had already shifted back to gentle fatherly pride.
The coronation ceremony was to be held in the palace's main durbar hall royal court, which had been decorated to breathtaking perfection. Thousands of marigold flowers hung in garlands, interspersed with roses and jasmine. Traditional Rajasthani musicians played classical ragas musical compositions while guests began to arrive—royal families from across India, prominent business leaders, politicians, and dignitaries from around the world.
