Ruhanika
The next few days passed in a blur of heightened security, hushed family meetings, and an undercurrent of tension that seemed to permeate every corner of the palace. It felt strange. All of this was new for me, and I needed time to adjust. The brief encounter with Mahendra Kapoor outside my school had left everyone on edge, especially my Papa, who had doubled—no, tripled—the security around me. Yet amidst all the chaos, one question continued to haunt me: Why had that man felt so familiar?
I was sitting in the garden pavilion, attempting to focus on a book but failing miserably as my mind kept drifting back to that moment of recognition. The memory of his eyes—calculating yet somehow intimate—sent an involuntary shiver down my spine.
"Penny for your thoughts, Sunshine?" Darsh Bhai's voice pulled me from my reverie. I looked up to see him approaching with two cups of hot chocolate.
I accepted the offered cup gratefully. "Just thinking about... everything."
He settled beside me on the bench. "That's quite a lot to be thinking about," he observed with a gentle smile. "Anything specific troubling you?"
I hesitated, unsure if I should voice the strange feeling that had been plaguing me. "Darsh bhai, when I saw that man—that Kapoor—I felt like... like I knew him somehow. Is that crazy?"
The slight stiffening of his posture was almost imperceptible, but I'd grown adept at reading my brothers' reactions. "Why do you ask?" His tone was carefully neutral.
"Because I saw the same recognition in his eyes," I replied, watching him closely. "Like he wasn't seeing me for the first time."
Darsh bhai set his cup down, his expression troubled. "Sunshine, there's something you should know—something we've all been reluctant to tell you."
My heart rate quickened. "What is it?"
"Kapoor didn't just help your mother take you away," he said quietly. "He was... involved in your early childhood. More than we realized at the time."
"What do you mean 'involved'?" I pressed, a sense of dread building inside me.
He sighed heavily. "After your mother took you, you weren't immediately taken to the Senghals' home. For almost six months, you stayed with Kapoor. He... he pretended you were his niece, kept you in his house while all the necessary false documentation was being arranged."
The revelation hit me like a physical blow. "I lived with him? For six months?"
Darsh bhai nodded grimly. "We didn't know this until recently. Papa had his contacts hunting for you everywhere, but Kapoor had covered his tracks well. By the time you were placed with the Senghals, your trail had gone completely cold."
My mind reeled with this new information. "So my earliest memories could be..."
"With him," he confirmed, his voice tight with suppressed anger. "You were only two, so it's unlikely you'd have conscious memories, but..."
