Peter slumped onto the couch, looking at you with the biggest, most pitiful puppy eyes.
"How... how do you do this every day?" He whined, clutching his stomach. "I mean, I get it-fasting, it's all noble and stuff. But... it's hard!"
You bit back a laugh, patting his arm as you sat down beside him. "It's really not as bad as you're making it sound, Peter. Plus, it's good for us. Fasting is a way to practice patience, remember?"
Peter groaned, dropping his head onto your shoulder dramatically. "I know, I know, you've told me like a million times. I just... I didn't know patience was going to feel like this. You make it look so easy, and I'm sitting here counting every minute until we can eat."
You smiled softly, brushing his messy curls back. "Well, fasting isn't just about being hungry, Pete. It's about remembering how lucky we are that we have food to look forward to. There are people out there who don't know when their next meal is coming."
Peter's eyes softened as he listened, leaning in just a little closer. "I get that. I really do. But it's also about... um, getting closer to Allah, right?"
"Exactly." You nodded, happy he remembered. "It's a time to focus on praying, asking for forgiveness, and becoming a better person. Fasting helps us focus on what really matters and reminds us that everything we have is a blessing. We're not just training our bodies but also our hearts and minds."
Peter was quiet for a moment, the weight of your words settling over him. Then, he broke the silence with a sigh. "You're so wise. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here thinking about the food... which is probably not the point, huh?"
You chuckled, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "It's your first time, Peter. You'll get used to it. And besides, you've made it almost the whole day without breaking your fast. That's pretty amazing."
He shot you a grin, although there was still a hint of desperation in his eyes. "Thanks, but I think I'm hanging on by a thread. Every time I smell the food, my resolve cracks just a little bit more. Do you think I'll be this dramatic every day?"
"Oh, absolutely," you teased. "But that's okay. You're doing your best, and that's what matters."
He sighed, falling back against the couch and closing his eyes, as if conserving energy. "Okay, so remind me of the plan again... we break our fast with dates?"
"Right! Eating dates first is Sunnah-it's what the Prophet used to do. Dates have natural sugars, which help replenish your energy quickly."
Peter nodded, impressed. "Makes sense. You really know a lot about this."
"Well, I've been fasting since I was a kid, so it's just something I grew up with," you replied, giving his shoulder a comforting pat. "Don't worry, Pete, you're doing fine. You're here, trying, and that's enough."
Peter looked up at you with a soft smile, the hunger in his eyes briefly replaced with affection. "You know, I think that's my favorite part. I mean, if I have to be hungry, at least I get to be hungry with my amazing wife. It makes it feel...more meaningful."
You smiled, feeling your heart warm at his words. "Well, I'm glad I can be a part of it with you."
Then, suddenly, his eyes flicked to the clock. "How long now?"
"Just a couple more minutes," you replied, laughing softly. "You've got this."
Peter clutched his stomach again. "Easy for you to say. I feel like I've aged five years."
Finally, the sound of the adhan drifted through the room, signaling the time for iftar. Peter's eyes lit up instantly, and he practically bolted to the table.
"Wait, Peter!" You laughed, following him. "Eat the dates first, remember?"
"I know, I know," he replied, grabbing a date with an eager grin.
The table was already set, a delicious spread waiting for the both of you. There were dates, a steaming bowl of chicken soup, fresh samosas, a small plate of cut fruit, and warm bread with hummus on the side. You'd even prepared a few homemade pakoras, and Peter's eyes lit up when he saw them.
He bit into the date with an audible sigh of relief, practically melting with each bite. "This... this date is amazing," he mumbled, as if he hadn't eaten a date before in his life.
You shook your head, laughing as you joined him at the table. "That's what hunger will do to you. Makes everything taste like the best thing in the world."
Peter smiled at you, a little sheepish. "Thank you. For being patient with me today."
"Anytime, Peter," you replied softly, reaching for his hand. "I'm glad we could do this together."
With that, you both started your iftar, the warmth of the food and the comfort of each other's company making it one of the most memorable moments you'd shared.
