The night was peaceful. Your room was dimly lit by the soft glow of your nightlight, the cool air from the AC making the thin blanket draped over you feel just right. Everything was quiet, except for the faint ticking of your bedside clock. You were deep in sleep, lost in some random dream when-
Rustling.
A small noise, barely noticeable, but enough to make your subconscious stir. It wasn't the sound of the AC kicking in or your curtains shifting from the air. No, this was different. Your heart picked up pace as you strained your ears, keeping your eyes shut, pretending to still be asleep. Maybe you were imagining it.
Then, another sound.
Your body froze, fear creeping into your veins. Slowly, carefully, you peeled your eyes open. It was dark, but your senses were on high alert, scanning the room for any sign of movement. And then-
A dark lump on the ceiling.
Your first instinct was to scream, your lungs filling with air, but before you could let it out, the lump spoke.
"Don't scream! Your parents are asleep! It's just me!"
Your hand flew to the bedside lamp, and in an instant, the warm glow illuminated the room-revealing Peter Parker, your best friend, the boy who lived in the apartment below yours, perched on your ceiling. Upside down. Like a damn spider.
Which, technically, he was.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" You yelled, sitting up, your heart still hammering against your ribs.
"Shhh, it's late," Peter hushed you, glancing towards your closed bedroom door like he expected your parents to come barging in any second.
You threw a pillow at him. "Why the fuck are you on my ceiling?!" You whisper-shouted, eyes narrowing at him.
"I couldn't sleep," he replied nonchalantly, like hanging upside down in someone's bedroom was the most normal thing in the world.
"And you thought scaring me to death would help you fall asleep?!"
"I texted you before coming over," Peter argued.
"I was asleep! You creep!"
There was a beat of silence before Peter grinned down at you. "Nice shirt."
Your brows furrowed in confusion before realization hit you like a truck. The thin-strapped tank top you were wearing, the AC on full blast, and your nipples.....
Oh.
Your arms flew to grab the blanket, yanking it up to cover your chest. "Pervert."
Peter snickered, flipping off the ceiling and landing gracefully on the floor, like a cat. "I wasn't looking, I swear," he teased, raising his hands in mock surrender. "But, uh, now that I know-"
"Get out."
He flopped onto your bed instead, stretching out like he owned the place. "You wound me."
You glared at him. "You're impossible."
"And yet, here I am."
"You know, normal people deal with insomnia by drinking warm milk or counting sheep, not breaking into their best friend's bedroom like a goddamn serial killer."
"I didn't break in," Peter defended. "Your window was unlocked."
"That is called trespassing, dumbass."
Peter ignored you, reaching for one of your stuffed animals and tossing it into the air. "Can I sleep over?"
You sighed, rubbing your temples. "If you want to sleep, grab the air mattress from my closet."
Peter groaned. "I gotta do it?"
"You're not a guest. I didn't invite you. You literally broke into my bedroom." You laid back down, pulling the blanket up to your chin. "So, no, I'm not helping. Help yourself with whatever you need. You know where things are."
Peter pouted but eventually dragged himself off the bed. He rummaged through your closet, muttering under his breath about how mean you were, before pulling out the air mattress and setting it up on the floor.
As he pumped air into it, he mumbled, "Y'know, I could just sleep on your bed."
"You could also sleep in your own bed, yet here we are."
"Cold."
"You don't even sleep that much, Peter. Why do you need to crash here?"
Peter shrugged, avoiding your gaze as he continued inflating the mattress. "I just like being here, alright?"
You stared at him, your annoyance fading slightly. "You know, you could've just said you wanted to talk instead of scaring the hell out of me."
He sat down on the air mattress, resting his elbows on his knees. "Would you have let me in if I knocked?"
"Probably not."
"Exactly."
You sighed, snuggling back against your pillows. "So what's up?"
Peter hesitated before answering, his voice softer this time. "Just... everything. School, Spidey stuff, life. It's a lot."
You nodded, understanding. "You wanna talk about it?"
"Nah." He flopped back onto the air mattress, staring at your ceiling. "Just needed to be somewhere that felt normal."
You smiled slightly. "So my room feels normal?"
"Yeah." He turned his head to look at you. "Your bed's comfier than mine too."
"Not happening, Parker."
He grinned. "Worth a shot."
A comfortable silence settled between you two. You turned off the bedside lamp, the darkness wrapping around you both once again.
"Hey, (Y/N)?"
"Yeah?"
"Thanks."
"For what?"
"For not kicking me out."
You rolled your eyes. "You wouldn't have left even if I did."
Peter chuckled. "True."
A beat of silence.
"You're still a creep though."
Peter laughed, the sound light and genuine. "Yeah, yeah. Goodnight."
You sighed, shaking your head before closing your eyes. "Goodnight, Bug-Boy."
Peter groaned. "Ugh. That's the worst one yet."
You rolled over, closing your eyes. "Peter?"
"Yeah?"
"Get out of my bedroom before my parents wake up in the morning."
He huffed, and muttered with an exaggerated sigh. "Noted."
You smiled to yourself, shaking your head. Despite everything, you couldn't help but be fond of him. Your complicated, annoying, web-slinging best friend.
And with that, the night returned to its peaceful state, with Peter snoring softly from the floor and you drifting back to sleep, feeling oddly comforted by his presence.
