Shawn's POV;

My heart pounds in my chest as I see the medics run onto the ice and try to stop the bleeding. As they gently lift her onto a stretcher, I notice that her bone is visible. I wince. A compound fracture. That must kill.

"Shawn, get in the car," dad says as the stretcher goes by us. I look up to him and see that he hasn't taken his eyes off of Aaliyah. I quickly get up and follow my dad to the car. I get in the passenger seat and dad steps on the gas, quickly following behind the ambulance.

Please be okay, please be okay, I pray in my head my dad continues to drive. Because we can't go over the speed limit, we get farther behind in traffic than the ambulance, since it has a right to pass everyone else. I pull out my phone and tweet

Hey guys, my sister just hurt her arm at hockey and I'd be so grateful if you send your prayers out to us, thanks.

I slip my phone back into my pocket and stare out the window anxiously, tapping my foot as we drive. I remember the day my mom told me I would have a sister. I was about three when this happened. My mom and dad sat me in the living room and told me that I would be having a baby brother or sister. I vaguely remembering wondering how this happened, and I definitely remember hoping I would get a brother. I was a little disappointed when we found out it was a girl, but I warmed to the idea quickly. I turned four just one month before Aaliyah was born, and all I wanted to do was play with her, my mom used to tell us. It was a bad thing at first, because I used to always wake her up, but as she got older, I wore out all her energy, which my mom always enjoyed. She also told us she loved watching us play.

I bite my lip as we pull into the hospital parking lot and follow my dad inside. "Hi, I'm here for Aaliyah Mendes," he says to the receptionist. She nods and types the name into her computer. "She's been admitted to pediatrics on the third floor," the nurse says. Dad nods and I follow him into the elevator.

I don't go to hospitals very often. I forgot how busy they are. People are rushing around all the time, both doctors and visitors. I feel bad when we get to the third floor, and I see a little boy with both legs casted. I frown and follow my father to the nurse station on the third floor and gives her the name, but the nurse says she has no update, just that Aaliyah was in the ER and hasn't been taken to her room yet.

"Well why hasn't she been taken to her room yet?" Dad asks. I can hear the anger in his voice. Aaliyah is his little girl. "I'm sorry sir, but I don't have any news yet. If you take a seat in the waiting area," she gestures to rows of chairs behind the service desk, "and when we hear any news I'll let you know." Dad sighs in frustration and stomps over to a chair. I sit next him. "Dad, I'm sure she'll be fine," I say, hoping to reassure him. "You know if she's not we can't go to New York," he says, turning to me. I shrug. "The fans will understand." He sighs. "I hate choosing between you guys, you know that," he says. I cock my head. "Dad, you're not choosing. If my fans don't understand that I need to be here for my family, then they're not true fans. If Aaliyah's not good, I'm staying." He smiles. "I raised such a caring man." I smile, and we continue to wait for an update.

It's been about a half hour, and still we've heard nothing about Aaliyah. I'm starting to worry. There have been lots of responds to my tweet a little while ago, and hearing all the prayers people are saying for us makes me feel a little bit better. I scroll through and favorite some, and retweet some too. I tweet,

Thanks for all the prayers and support guys. Still no news yet, but I'll make sure to let you all know as soon as we hear something.

A few minutes later, I get a text from Allie.

Allie: Hey, hear anything about Aaliyah?

Shawn: No, not yet.

Allie: Oh, I'm sorry. I'm hope she's okay.

Shawn: Thanks.

When I put my phone away, I see two young girls walking by. One is in a wheelchair. She's small and pale and has a pretty knitted hat on her head. There's an older girl pushing the wheelchair, a nurse walking next to them. The girl in the wheelchair glances at me, than tilts her head back to the girl pushing the wheelchair with wide eyes. I smile, an idea popping into my head. "I'll be right back dad," I say. He nods and watches as I get up and walk over.

"Hey," I say, kneeling down to look at the girl in the wheelchair. She has a huge grin on her face. "I'm Shawn Mendes, you know who I am?" She grins and nods. "Well what's your name sweetie?" I ask. "Bella," she squeals. "Bella? That's a beautiful name, perfect for a beautiful girl." She grins again and giggles. "Thank you." "Is this your sister?" I ask, gesturing to the older girl pushing the wheelchair. They both nod. "Hi, what's your name sweetie?" "I'm Jess," she says shyly. "You both have such beautiful names, and you're both so beautiful," I say. "I don't know why you're here, but I really hope you feel better soon," I say. "Can I take I picture with you guys?" I ask. They both nod eagerly, and I take out my phone. Jess also gives me hers, and we take another picture. "I don't have anything else to give you, but I do have some bracelets I'm wearing," I say. I sign one for each of them and hand them to the girls. "Thank you sooo much!" They both say. "No problem. Stay beautiful, girls." The nurse takes over and pushes Bella down the hall, and I sit down again next to my dad. "That was sweet," he says. I smile and post the picture on on Instagram with the caption,

met these beautiful girls today, stay strong❤️' and tweet, 'just met the most beautiful girls at the hospital, stay strong and get well soon💗'

After this, the nurse comes over. "Mr. Mendes?" She says. Dad nods. "I have an update on your daughter, Aaliyah."

I feel my heart sink when the nurse tells us that she's gone down to surgery.

"Surgery?" Dad repeats. "It was just a broken arm!" "Actually, it was a compound fracture, which requires surgery to fix. She needed an OR, which is what took so long. They took her down a few minutes ago." My dad nods and the nurse goes back to the service center. I go back on Twitter to announce what's been happening, and also text Allie.

She responds with, 'Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry. I hope she's okay.'

I text back and thank her, then decide to visit some of the other sick children on the floor while I wait for Aaliyah to get out of surgery.

The nurses and doctors agree, and take pleasure in seeing how happy my visiting makes them. I never realized how young my audience gets.

I took pictures with all of them and posted them on Twitter, saying something kind about each one. I also tweet,

Got to meet some amazing kids today. Makes me realize how lucky my family is to be safe and healthy.

By the time this is over, Aaliyah is out of surgery and in her room. She has a thick cast on her arm and is sleeping when we come to see her. Mom is there, too. "She was such a trooper," mom says with a smile. I sigh with relief. "So she'll be okay?" Mom nods. "The doctor says she'll be just fine."
