I wake up inside a room with no door. There are only four walls around me. Light enters through a small crack—it's high up, and I have nothing to stand on to see where I am.
My last memory is that I'm about to call Ate Grapes to tell her I'm on my way home, but then someone grabs my arm. They cover my mouth and nose until I lose consciousness.
And now, I'm here. I don't know what part of the Philippines I'm in.
The room is still dark. The only light comes from a small window. I'm slowly finding it hard to breathe.
There's nothing in the room. My belongings aren't here either. I don't think this is just a robbery; this is a kidnapping.
But who would kidnap me? We just got back from France. I don’t know anyone who hates me. My parents, on the other hand, have many enemies.
I slowly stand up because the floor is cold. I feel like I'm going to catch a cold if I don't get out of here.
I feel along the wall because I can't see. The thought that there's no chance of escape makes it harder to breathe.
I'm not afraid of being imprisoned, but not like this. I'm scared.
I hear men laughing. I don't know whether to go back to where I was sitting and pretend to be asleep or scream for help.
But maybe they're the ones who kidnapped me. Maybe they'll hurt me if I make a noise.
In the end, I decide to return to where I was sitting, but I don't pretend to be asleep. I want to know why they're doing this to me.
Suddenly, the wall in front of me splits in two. I don't know how it happens. Maybe there's a secret lock on the outside.
Five men enter. Judging by their height, they look to be between twenty and thirty years old. Their voices also sound youngish.
"She's awake," one of them says.
I can't see their faces or clothes, but they don't seem to be the ones who grabbed me earlier.
"Where am I?" I ask bravely, trying to keep my voice steady.
"Can't you see? You're in a prison cell," one replies.
"Why am I here? Why did you kidnap me?" I ask again.
"We know, but we won't tell you," one teases. "Unless you have a sister."
Another man slaps him. "You're always looking for women," he scolds.
"Just kidding."
"We can't answer your questions. We weren't the masterminds behind your kidnapping," the last one says. "Our cousin planned this."
"Which cousin?" I ask nervously.
He shrugs. "His only order was to check on you. You seem fine."
"I'm not fine," I whimper. "I don't like this place. I don't like the dark, the cramped space, the lack of anything to see. I'm scared."
"That's pitiful. Should we let her go? Let's just tell our cousin she escaped."
"Are you stupid? Do you think he'll believe that five of us couldn't keep one weak woman?"
"Please, let me go."
"We can't. Only our cousin can decide whether to release you or not."
"I'm just looking for a job so my sister and I can survive. Why did you have to kidnap me?" I cry.
"Shit, she's crying!" one of them says frantically.
"Women," the one at the end mutters, shaking his head before approaching me.
