"Ilan score mo?"
"Pamasahe sa jeep."
"Bawi na lang ako sa college."
"Sure na sila Ma'am na ga-graduate ako? Sayang."
"Ang liliit ng grades ko. Kapag ako talaga grumaduate, totoo talaga si Lord."
"First quarter 82, second quarter 81, third quarter 80... tangina kinakabahan ako sa fourth quarter."
I just laugh as I clean up the confetti from our senior high class closing ceremony.
Of course, it's impossible not to get emotional with my classmates. We've been together for almost two years. A lot of friend circles fell apart because of cheating, and many new ones formed along the way.
It's been fun being their class Vice President and President for almost two years. They rarely gave us trouble—just every now and then.
Sure, they act childish sometimes. But whenever I scold them, they immediately look so apologetic. They don't want me to get mad… because they say I might tell Yhael about them.
That guy...
"HUMSS 1, 'wag kakalimutang kunin ang mga gamit ninyo. Wala na dapat maiiwan dito since this is our last day in this classroom," paalala ko sa kanilang lahat.
Muli akong natawa dahil nag-kunwari silang mga umiiyak habang niyayakap ang kanilang upuan na marami nang sira.
Once everyone leaves and I'm alone, I sigh. I look around the classroom, thinking back to everything that happened in each corner.
This classroom… it's witnessed all the struggles my classmates and I have gone through. The tears when we couldn't answer surprise quizzes or graded recitations, the heartbreaks, and—most memorably—the guys cheating at the back even though they knew there were CCTV cameras.
Our adviser told us not to leave any trace of ourselves behind. So, I walk over to the bulletin board at the back, where our class officers’ pictures are displayed.
There are birthday lists, snapshots taken by classmates—printed and pinned up. Most of them show all of us together.
Our very first photo as a class in Grade 11—I was always at the edge. But in our final picture for Grade 12, I'm right in the center. They posed with their fingers pointed at me while I smiled in the middle, like their queen.
I take them all down, one by one—even the name of our section. It's heartbreaking to look back on all the memories we made, knowing they won't happen again.
A lot of people will stop studying to work before college. Many will leave to study in other countries or faraway provinces… like Sovie.
"You guys aren't kids anymore."
I turn around to see who spoke.
Yhael walks up to me and starts helping me take down the class officers' names. The first one he removes is mine.
"Aphle Xierinah Poniente, class president of Grade 12-HUMSS 1. Angas,” he says with a soft smile.
"Tapos na closing niyo?" tanong ko bago kinuha sa kamay niya ang pangalan ko. Sinadya niya pa talagang patagalin ang bitaw doon para mahawakan ang kamay ko.
"Kanina pa. Hinihintay nga kita sa waiting shed. Sabi ni Sovie nagpa-iwan ka raw dito kaya sumunod ako," sagot niya.
He grabbed a chair and sat down, slouching as he watched me organize the pictures and put them into an eco bag.
