Chapter 51

"Aphle!" Naglilinis ako ng kwarto nang biglang pumasok si Lei. Naghahabol siya ng hininga.

Nag-aalala akong lumapit sa kaniya dahil mukhang may hindi siya magandang ibabalita sa akin.

"What happened? Why do you look like that?" I asked, worried.

She held both my shoulders and took a quick breath before answering me.

"I just received a call from your friend Sovie. She said Janser and Daniel are in the hospital right now because they got into an accident earlier this morning," she said directly.

My heart pounded harder with worry for my two friends.

"D-Do you know which hospital they were taken to?" I asked, my tears threatening to fall.

Sovie's surely deeply worried about Daniel.

Lei nodded at my question. She held my hand and led me into the closet. "Get dressed. I’m taking you to the hospital," she said quickly.

"You’re taking me?" I asked hesitantly.

Then I suddenly thought of Yhael. He definitely wouldn’t allow me to go somewhere that far.

Lei shook her head at me, as if she already knew why I was hesitating.

"Forget about my brother for now. What’s important is that you see your friends."

I’m not a doctor anyway. I’m sure they’ll be taken care of there—unless the hospital is short-staffed.

Lei gently pushed me back into the closet, so I had no choice but to find something to wear. Good thing I had already taken a shower, so I just needed to change clothes.

Pagkalabas ko ng closet ay nakita kong may kausap si Lei sa kaniyang phone. Nakatalikod siya sa aking direksyon kaya hindi niya napansing naririnig ko na ang kaniyang sinasabi sa kausap.

"Aphle and I have somewhere to go today. I can’t, Couz," she says to the person on the line, clearly annoyed.

She’s talking to one of her cousins—probably about something business-related.

"I don’t know," she replies.

I stay in my spot, waiting for Lei to finish her call.

After a few moments, she ends the call and turns to me. She looks a bit surprised to see me already there.

"You heard that?" she says, scratching the back of her head. I nod.

She walks closer to me. "Ahm... Aphle... is it okay if we don’t go visit your friend today?"

I nod immediately.

"It’s just... there’s no one to go with you. My brother isn’t here and I can’t reach him, so I don’t know if it’s okay for my brother to travel you far with just the bodyguards."

I nod again. "I understand, Lei. Don’t worry," I say with a smile.

"Besides, my friends will understand why I couldn’t visit them right away."

Her expression turns a little sad. "Don’t worry. Once I’m done with whatever my wonderful cousin is making me do, I’ll go with you to the hospital, okay?"

Tumangong muli ako. "Sige na." Bahagya ko siyang tinulak palabas ng kwarto. "Asikasuhin mo muna ang pinapagawa ng pinsan mo sa'yo. Ayos lang sa akin, Lei."

Kumaway siya sa akin ng bahagya bago lumabas ng kwarto.

Pagkalabas niya ay dahan-dahan akong naupo sa kama. Pinagmasdan ko ang aking hitsura sa body mirror. Nakapang-alis na ako.
