After we play at the playground, we buy dirty ice cream. Daniel even gets upset when I call it that. They grew up calling it "ice cream in a cone." I don’t really know that.
We walk slowly back to Ysmael’s family mansion. The sun is already setting, and the full moon is starting to peek out.
After Sovie and I talk about her and Daniel, she falls silent again. I know Daniel notices, but he doesn’t do anything. Maybe they’ll talk later.
I respect whatever they feel for each other—if there’s anything at all. That’s between them; I shouldn’t interfere.
When we reach the front of the house, I face them. "Aren’t you going inside? Come with me and have dinner in the room," I invite them.
I watch them get into the vehicle they’re using to go home. I wave at them until the car drives away.
I let out a deep sigh as I turn to face the large, closed door of the mansion. What could be waiting for me in the living room?
I’m scared to go inside. That woman who hurt me might be there again.
"Hindi ka pa ba papasok?" Narinig kong tanong ng body guard na nasa gilid ko. Halatang pagod na siya kakabantay sa akin.
I let out a sigh before walking, hoping to enter the mansion, when I suddenly hear footsteps approaching.
I turn around and almost bump my face into a man’s chest. I quickly take two steps back. My back lands right against the closed door of the mansion.
"Why aren’t you going in yet?" a familiar voice asks, serious.
I quickly look up at the man until our eyes meet. My heart starts beating rapidly. Instead of answering, I just stare into his eyes.
His brows furrow because I keep staring. He doesn’t back down; instead, he straightens his posture and keeps his gaze fixed on me. "You want a staring contest? Fine,” he says flatly.
I immediately look away. He lets out an irritated sigh.
"I-I’m just nervous…" I answer, stammering.
He tries to catch my gaze, but I keep avoiding it. "You’re nervous? Why?" he asks, like what I feel actually matters to him.
As if he even cares if I die from boredom.
I stop resisting and bravely meet his eyes. I have no choice but to tell him the truth. I also don’t like lying.
"I-I’m thinking that your f-family might be in the living room again… I’m just scared that one of them might h-hurt me again…" I confess.
"Again?" he asks. I nod.
"When was the first time?"
He doesn’t know?
"T-The day I was moved here," I say.
If he really doesn’t know… "C-Can you not bring it up? If you didn’t know about it… maybe just forget it? Please don’t tell them I said anything, please? I-I just don’t want—"
"I don’t like being interrupted," he cuts me off.
I bite my lower lip and nod. My eyes widen when he steps closer. I instinctively touch my shoulder, thinking he’s about to grab it.
