Chapter 49

After a few days, I grow more and more bored inside the room.

Lei hasn’t visited me in a while, so when Sunday comes, I’m genuinely happy to see my friends again. Not all of them are here, but I’m still glad.

"Aphle!" Sovie greets me cheerfully. Only Kuya Zhack and Daniel are with her this time.

"Ackk, na-miss kita! Kamusta ka rito? Paniguradong bored na bored ka," sunod-sunod niyang sinabi.

"Bakit tatlo lang kayo? Nasaan si Juniel at Janser?" Tanong ko.

"May work. Hindi na pinayagan mag day off." Natatawa niyang sagot. "By the way, may maganda akong balita sa'yo!"

"Ano 'yon?" Excited kong tanong.

Pinalipas niya pa ang ilang segundo bago magsalitang muli. "Pumayag si Yha—Ysmael na ilabas ka namin ngayong araw!"

"Really?" My eyes widen in shock.

She nods repeatedly. I turn to Daniel and Kuya Zhack to confirm.

When they nod, overwhelming joy washes over me. I hold both of Sovie’s hands. "Thank you, Sovie!" I say gratefully. "Finally, I can go out again!"

"Sabi ko naman sa'yo, lahat gagawin ko para makalabas ka kahit papaano sa kwartong ito."

Overwhelmed with joy, I start jumping up and down. Sovie joins me, and we both laugh as we bounce in excitement.

We stop when I suddenly feel a sharp pain in my chest. I don’t let it show—it’s a pain I’m already used to. It always happens when I get too happy.

I take a deep breath and calm myself down before looking for something to wear. Even though I don’t know where we’re going, I pick a green dress. My feelings for the color green haven’t changed. It still looks beautiful to me.

Green makes me feel at peace. When I see vibrant green leaves, I feel hopeful.

"Saan tayo pupunta?" Tanong ko.

"Kahit saan," sagot ni Sovie. "Hindi ko rin alam e."

"Maglakad-lakad na lang tayo. 'Yun ay kung ayos lang sa'yo, Aphle." Sinabi ni Daniel.

"Ayos lang naman sa akin."

"May nadaanan kaming playground. Tara, heal natin inner child natin," tawang sinabi ni Sovie.

"Anong i-he-heal sa'yo? Masaya naman childhood mo." Sumbat ni Daniel.

"Tanga mo, inner child kasi ni Aphle!" Sigaw ni Sovie. At nag-umpisa na naman silang mag-away na parang aso at pusa.

I just sigh at them before turning back to the mirror. I pick up the comb and slowly run it through my long, curly hair. My hair naturally looks like it’s been styled with electric curls, even though it hasn’t.

The two never stop arguing. I sigh every time they mention my name.

I put the comb down and start arranging my hair. I tuck half of it behind my back, letting the rest fall over my left shoulder.

I keep adjusting my hair until I suddenly stop. Kuya Zhack and I catch each other’s eyes in the mirror. I think he’ll look away—but he doesn’t. He keeps staring right at my face.

I don’t know why, but I hold his gaze for a moment longer. The eye contact breaks only when Sovie calls him to join their argument.

He doesn’t join in, but he stops looking at me too.

Suddenly, Claudine crosses my mind—Kuya’s wife. We look exactly alike. I know it’s possible for two people to resemble each other even without being related by blood.
