Hally woke on Christmas Day to a startle from Dobby who had been standing at the side of her bed watching her with eager eyes.

As she composed herself and decided to sit up she had watched the small elf pull out a box from behind his back. He had gifted her a pair of homemade mismatched socks that were, funnily enough— green and red just like her gown for the ball.

Hally laughed as she handed him his first ever matching pair of socks, that she had picked up in Hogsmeade with Hermione. They were spelled by her to fit his ginormous feet and insulated with faux fur to keep them warm when he took his nightly walks through the grounds.

It was a lovely start to her day to get to see her small friend again before he scampered back to the kitchens to help cook Christmas dinner.

Hally had opened the remainder of her gifts with Hermione and the Weasley's before they had their morning tea.

There wasn't any presents under the tree from Snape to her but she wasn't surprised by that as there was an agreement between them that they would share their gifts with each other when they were able to have alone time over the coming days.

The school was packed for the holidays this year and given that it was the day of the Yule ball, there was too much going on for either of them to try and sneak away. So for the first time in a long time, Hally decided to just focus on her friends. She had all evening to get ready and prepare herself for princess Malfoy's bemoaning.

All was well until Pigwidgeon landed on to the table with a letter addressed to her from Sirius.

"You should read that... it could be important." Hermione said through her muffled chewing.

"I'm sure it's not, he's probably just wishing me a Happy Christmas." Hally dismissed while tossing the envelope aside and continuing on with her breakfast.

Hermione sighed lowly before grabbing the letter and storing it in her robes for later.

The remainder of the day had went by rather quickly for Hally and her friends. They tinkered around with their gifts for a majority of the morning and in the afternoon they all had a snowball fight in the courtyard— even Hermione had joined in on it. Hally's smile was brighter than it had been in days and her laughs were full of genuine enjoyment. She had managed to go through the day with a level of carefreeness that she had forgotten she could feel.

Finally, she was enamoured by one of the best Christmas dinners she had ever had the pleasure of consuming before Hermione suggested that the two of them go and start getting ready for the ball.

Hally had come to the harsh realization of two things in the two hours before the ball commenced.

The first thing was that hairstyling charms were quite taxing things when you were unsure of how to perform them properly. Eventually, her and Hermione figured it out but the process took a whole hour just to charm both of their hairs into elegant styles.
